Coming from a powerful family of officials of Syrian origin, he began very early career, his responsibilities are administrative advisor, commissioner, secretary, ordinary consul, in 533 until reaching the rank of "prefect praetoria" already covered by their father. He retired in old age in Calabria devoting himself to studies. His works, varied in subject, were widely spread and influence on the medieval Latin literature and provide useful insights for the knowledge of life and culture of the time. This book is a kind of anthology of three Greek authors, Socrates, Sozomen and Bishop Theodoret of Cyrus, here called Theodoric , and are interdependent with each other. Cassiodorus, after a brief preface that presents the works of three writers, stresses its usefulness for the Christian reader.
