Basileae [i.e. Basel]. Nicolai Brylingeri, 1567. Castalio Edition.

Folio in 6s, and 8s.[10], 292pp. 317pp, [1]. Lacking a1 (title) and final blank (c8, but else collates entirely complete: a2 6, a z6, A 8. a Z6, A 6, B 8, C 7. Attractively bound in slightly later elaborately blind stamped pigskin (lacking clasps), with a C19th gilt armorial stamp later added to upper board, and skilfully rebacked, re edged and recornered in brown morocco. Some wear to extremities, boards. A little cracking to joints, bumping to corners. Occasional wormholes to boards. Bookplate to front endpapers, 2 leaves in manuscript before a2. Some staining occasionally througout, though mostly confined to first few signatures, and final 50 or so leaves. The occasional mark to page, the odd marginal tear/crease. Worming to manuscript leaf, and first leaf of text (a2) see photo. Some previous owner's insciptions. First 50 60 leaves quite heavily annotated in ink, in both Latin and Greek, in a scholarly hand. Printed throughout in double column Greek and Latin.

This edition, with annotations by Sebastian Castalio (1515 1563), is one of the definitive bi lingual editions of the works of the Greek poet Homer containing all the major works, including Iliad and Odyssey, as well as Plutarch's life of Homer.

Homer, legendary epic Greek poet, who was considered by Greeks and medieval humanists to have been a historical individual, but which modern scholarship considers to be the culmination of centuries of oral tradition and formulaic composition of poetry. Herodotus considered Homer to have lived around 850 BC, others record the age of the Trojan Wars, around 1190 80BC. It is no overestimation to say that the whole Greek and Roman tradition, and arguably the entire Western Canon of literature owes much to the Homeric writings.
