Bolifant or George Bishop, London. 1598]. First English Edition. Folio. [18 of 20], 1-118, 123-292, 301-496, 513-710, 713-720, 723-780, 783-90pp, [108 of 122]. Collates as follows, A2-10, A-G8, H-3, H6-8, I-S8, T-2, T7-8, U-Z8, Aa-Hh8, Kk-Xx8, Yy1-3, Yy5-8, Zzz-8, Aaa-Bbb8, Ccc-6, Ccc8, Ddd-8, Eee-Qqq4. Lacking 25 leaves in total: A1 (title), H4-5, T3-6, I-8, Yy4-Zz1, Ccc7, and the final 8 leaves of index, Rrr-Sss4. Bound in modern quarter black calf over cloth boards, red morocco title label, new endpapers (some adhesion from a dealer's description to front endpaper). Rubbing and wear to calf, foxing to boards. As with many books of this age, with various previous owner's markings, annotations and manicules (small diagrams of hands) in early English script, likely seventeenth-century. Marking, soiling and staining to some some leaves, occasional loss to margins and corners torn away, the odd small hole, some paper repairs to text. Some worming, mostly marginal, affecting only the odd word to a few pages. Leaves H5 and YY5-6 are trimmed and tipped in, perhaps from another copy but more than likely simply repaired last time this came to the attention of a binder. A note on the dating of this copy - despite lacking a title page, this copy is without doubt the 1598 edition for the following reasons: Only the 1598 and 1605 editions were printed in Black Letter, and whilst both these editions have the same number of pages, the 1605 edition has an entirely different collation of signatures: A-Lll8. The only issue we cannot resolve with the title page is the printer - this book was published by both George Bishop and Edmund Bollifont - with the latter slightly more common, with ESTC recording only 12 copies worldwide. THE FIRST EDITION IN ENGLISH of Ein new Artzney Buch by Christopher Wirsung or Wirzung (ca 1500-1571), first published Heidelberg, 1568. Translated into English by Jacob Mosan, a fellow German, the Praxis Medicinae was hugely influential in the field of vernacular medicine in England during the early seventeenth century. Chapters deal with different ailments, each then elaborating on specific symptoms. Wirzung's work was particularly valued in that it contained three indexes, firstly an index 'Contayneth the names of all diseases, accidents, and infirmities' including such diverse articles as 'Gums Putrifying', 'Harts panting through frighting' and 'Infection of the plague', but also a larger index containing 'all the simples that are specified in this worke, as rootes, herbts, flowers, fruits, plants, juices, gums, woods, stones, barks, metals, minerals, and earths; Also all the parts of beasts and of the body of man, that are or may be used in Physicke'. This second index was particularly novel, and one of the earliest English works to provide the classical Latin and Greek terms along-side the English words for certain medicines, botanical items and minerals. A third and and final index alphabetized these 'Latine, Greeke, and other strange names of all simples...'. As well as providing many botanical and natural remedies, this work also notes the importance of bathing, bloodletting and enemas to the practice of medicine. It is unsurprising, then, that Wirzung's Praxis Medicinae secured a wide readership - for it could be used as a quick reference guide by surgeons, doctors and apothecaries, as well as by the literate layman who was now privy to much medical information previously only available in the classical languages of early-modern Medicine. Scarce, with no copies listed for sale online, and fewer than 20 copies of all imprints available in libraries listed on ESTC. STC 25862 or 25863. Wellcome I, 6758.
