D. MAGNI AUSONII BURDIGALENSIS OPERA, Iacobus Tollius, M.D. recensuit, et Integris Scaligeri, Mariang. Accursii, Freheri, Scriverii; Selectis Vineti, Barthii, Acidalii, Gronovii, Graevii; Aliorumque Notis accuratissime digestis, nec non & suis animadversionibus illustravit.

PUBLISHED: AMSTELODAMI Apud IONNEM BLAEU, M DC LXXI (1671)

This is one of the more difficult to find books by DECIO MAGNO AUSONIO. In it he writes about the important teachers in his life, including: Jakob Tollius; Joseph Juste Scaliger; Mariangelus Accursius; Paulus Freherus; Eliae Vinet; Gasperus Barthius; Acidalius Valentius; Gronovius; and Graevius.

Hardcovers, leather covered boards, spine with four raised bands, gilt design and lettering on spine, 5 x 8, [36], 822 pp., [77].

Illustrated with a lovely FRONTISPIECE ENGRAVING, TITLE PAGE VIGNETTE, Some Engraved Initials, a number of Engraved end of chapter Vignettes, a beautiful engraving of a TOMB on page 789, wonderful GEOMETRY / MATHEMATICAL ENGRAVING on page 402; an engraving of the front and back sides of a coin on page 422, a Geometry Illustration / Engraving of an "Obeliscus" a "Pyramis Quadrangula" and a "Conus" on page 400.

The contemporary leather covered covers are completely split at the spine folds but holding well with the sewn binding; spine covering is chipped at the folds and ends, is faded and rubbed, but remains complete; the front and rear boards are rubbed and scraped, the corners are worn through; nonetheless this early covers remain sturdy.

Internally, the front and rear hinges are split but holding; the front and rear pastedowns have some pressed creasing (like pants improperly pressed by the cleaner), perhaps a binder's error; there is some foxing to the endpapers and a bit here and there throughout; there are 2 lines of very early and very tiny manuscript at the top of the front pastedown; there is a bb size bookworm hole that starts at the bottom margin of page 391, turns into 2 bb size holes starting at page 557, turns into a 1" winding trail of worm damage starting at page 809 that continues for about 60 70 pages until it ends before the last 30 or so pages; the worm damage is always in the blank bottom margin near the front corner, it does not affect any text; the leaf consisting of pages 527/528 is heavily wrinkled, probably from the book having closed on the page improperly, but the page remains sturdy and complete; there is some water shorelining to the bottom front corner of about one third of the middle pages, not bad and not affecting text; otherwise the inner pages are remarkably nice, remaining tight, bright, clean and unmarked.

A Handsome, Complete, Lovely, Clean Copy of this Rare Book, with Beautiful Engravings and Vignettes.
