1850 PORT DEPOSIT, MARYLAND LETTER - GRANDSON OF BETSY ROSS William J. Canby - Popularized Betsy Ross Autograph letter signed, "Wm. J. Canby", Colora [?], Port Deposit, MD, 11th mo. 3rd, 1850 [Quaker dated], 1 1/2pp., with integral stampless address leaf, Port Deposit circle date stamp, to Powell Stackhouse, Jr., Philadelphia. Canby accepts a position offered him by Stackhouse, and comments on the upcoming wedding of Emily. Although not mentioned in the letter, the position most likely was as a conveyancer [scrivener, professional scribe.] The Stackhouse Family Papers at Winterthur Library contains an 1849 letter which notes that Powell Stackhouse, Jr. and William Canby are in the "conveyancing business" together. The 1880 US Federal Census notes Canby's occupation as Conveyancer. William Jackson Canby (1825-1890) - Grandson of flagmaker, Betsy Ross; conveyancer. The story of Betsy Ross as the maker of the U.S. flag was published by Canby in 1870 and popularized during the 1876 Centennial celebrations. Based on later research, Ross' involvement in the making of the flag, is now thought to be at the least, partially mythical. Of additional note: Canby was a candidate in 1876 for the restoration of the Declaration of Independence. In a letter to the Library of Congress, April 13, 1876, he wrote, "I have had over thirty years experience in handling the pen upon parchment...the only feasible plan is to replenish the original with a supply of ink..."
