Wonderful and quite rare, 1850s, Soft Paste, Staffordshire, Black Americana / Anti-Slavery Transferware Child’s Uncle Tom's Cabin Plate featuring a scene inside a Southern Plantation Slave Cabin. This fantastic Anti-Slavery Plate measures approx. 8 5/8” in diameter and has an elaborately molded border featuring Doves' with olive branches. The central, transfer image is a scene of a the hearth area inside Uncle Tom's cabin. It is titled "Prayer Meeting in Uncle Tom's Cabin" and sub-titled "In the Language of a Pious Negro, Tom Pray's Right Up". Although the Plate is unmarked and undated, it was likely produced in the years between the publication of Harriett Beecher Stowe's "Uncle Tom's Cabin" (1852) and 1863 (the year of American Emancipation). The Image depicts a number of Negro Slaves, rapt in prayer. They are led by Uncle Tom and each of the "family" members offers his or her prayer in their own way. At the right a young white boy also kneels in prayer, his hand clasped over what is likely the Holy Bible. This fantastic early, Staffordshire, Soft Paste Anti-Slavery / Uncle Tom's Cabin Transferware Plate is an excellent condition. There are no chips, cracks, repairs or other physical damage of any kind. The early, soft paste is clean, bright and VERY attractive on the top surface while there is some VERY light staining on the back. A rare and simply wonderful, 1850s Soft Paste, Staffordshire, Black Americana / Anti-Slavery Transferware Child’s Uncle Tom's Cabin Plate and a fantastic addition to any collection!!!
