1857 HARPERS WEEKLY BOUND VOLUME COMPLETE WINSLOW HOMER Picture(s) and Description:

1857

Rare and very important Bound Volume of 52 Issues of Harper’s Weekly for the year 1857 beginning with Volume I, Number 1!! This fantastic volume of the first 52 issues of perhaps the most important 19th century illustrated magazine published in the United States includes a large number of outstanding images and chronicles the birth and maturation of Harper's Weekly as a News and Information Publication. This volume also includes the first 5 illustrations by Winslow Homer depicting Rugby Matches by American College Students (titled "The Match Between the Sophs. and Freshmen - the Opening" "Freshmen"; "The Sophs."; "Juniors"; and "Seniors") as well as hundreds of other beautiful illustrations by many other famous American Artists. This volume measures approx. 11 1/2” x 16” and 2 1/2” thick. It is Volume No. I and contains all 52 issues for the year - each issue is complete with no pages missing or clipped pages. The volume is bound in a turn of the 20th century, red brick colored cloth covers which are tight, intact and attractive with only light edge wear. The internal issues are complete, tight and quite clean throughout. There is only a single leaf that has a rather large, tight tear. Otherwise there are no significant tears or edge wear to any of the interior pages. There are a few pages with short edge tears at the center of the outer margin (approx. 1/4") typically caused by thumbing of the pages of these massive volumes. There is some VERY light, uniform age toning but overall this volume is EXTREMELY well preserved and does not show the extensive edge wear or tears that are commonly found in Bound Volumes of Harper's Weekly. All of the illustrations including, those by Winslow Homer, are in excellent condition (except as mentioned above). Although the binding of this Volume is sewn at the center, the double page plates are bound on a stub and do not have thread holes at the central, vertical fold. This Volume was deaccessioned from a New York State Library a number of years ago - the only library markings are the numbers at the base of the spine and a library bookplate on the inside front cover. There are NO library markings on any of the interior pages. This fantastic, 1857 Bound Volume of the first 52 issues of Harper’s Weekly contains reports and illustrations of all sorts of important American and International news and events. Harper’s Weekly is one of the most important, original sources of historical information and cultural insights into life in 19th century America that can be found. This fantastic, complete volume of 52 issues is offered here, as always, with no reserve. A wonderful source of very expensive, 19th century wood engravings and a fantastic addition to any library or collection!! Overseasshippping is extra and cost will be quoted at bidders request. Massachusetts residents must add 5% sales tax. Insurance is required on all items selling for $400 or more and optional on items selling for under $400 (but highly recommended. We have NEVER requested Feedback from our customers as we were taught that "fishing for compliments" was impolite but the new eBay Detailed Rating System has put us in a rather tight spot. Most buyers are unaware that eBay bases a monthly fee discount on a Seller's "Star" rating. A monthly average of "4.6 Stars" (in any one of the four "Star" categories) costs us approximately $400 in additional eBay Fees - that's $400 above what we would pay if we had a "4.8 Star" average in all 4 "Star" categories!! As a consequence we hope you do not find us rude to ask that if you are happy with our items, our service, and our packing & shipping please be sure to use the "Star" rating system and remember that a "5 Star" rating is the only way we can qualify for eBay's fee reduction program. , Powered by eBay Turbo ListerThe free listing tool.
