1857 Southern PICTURES OF SLAVERY African Slave History Picture(s) and Description:

rebel_soldier Store PICTURES OF SLAVERY IN CHURCH AND STATE This auction is for an original 1857 1ST EDITION of "PICTURES OF SLAVERY IN CHURCH AND STATE" by Rev. John Dixon Long. YOU'LL APPRECIATE THIS HISTORICAL TREASURE!!! In October 1856 John Dixon Long, a minister of the Methodist Episcopal Church and a leading U.S. abolitionist, moved to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania where he was dismayed by the level of support for slavery, although it was not legal in the commonwealth. This inspired Long to write a treatise on his experience of and views on slavery as it existed in his native state. This book was published for $1 in 1857 and was considered a major contribution to the case against slavery by Frederick Douglass and others. It vividly describes the life of slaves, the opinions of slavery at the time, and the effects of slavery upon the Church and State. It contains 410 pages of personal reminiscences of the author, biographical sketches, anecdotes, etc., as well as views of John Wesley and Richard Watson on slavery. Opposition to slavery in some religious communities began in the colonial era. John Wesley, the English evangelist and co-founder of Methodism, traveled to British colonial America in the early part of the eighteenth century. After his return to England, he published a tract in which he condemned the African slave trade and slavery and refuted the notion that slavery rescued Africans from barbarism, an often-used justification for slavery. John Dixon Long included Wesley's "Testimony Against Slavery" as an appendix in this book. Published in 1857, this book is in FAIR - GOOD CONDITION! for its age and especially to be 153 YEARS OLD!!! The basing of this condition is for the following reasons: the cosmetic appearance is less than to be desired as it is spine cocked. The exterior cover boards show the usual and expected wear in addition to the wear of cloth on the spine. The interior is clearly legible and enjoyable. There is expected foxing and blemishes. The most significant flaw is located on page 395. It is a one page leaf, torn in half as pictured below. Upon request, we can furnish a copy of the full leaf text page to the wininng bid. Otherwise, it is complete with all its pages, nicely bound and easy to read! This book measures 5 1/4" X 8". It is a RARE!!! book that a search of a major international internet book site reveals this to be ONE OF ONLY SIX AVAILABLE!!! at the time of this listing.
