Sir CHARLES LYELL (1797 1875), "Of all the English writers of treatises on geology, the first place must undoubtedly be assigned to Charles Lyell who exercised a profound influence on the geology of his time in all English speaking countries. With unwearied industry he marshalled in admirable order all the observations that he could collect in support of the doctrine that 'the present is the key to the past', which came to be known as 'uniformitarianism'. "Lyell's great talent lay in his ability to 'draw things together' he had 'a rare faculty of perceiving the connection of scattered facts with each other, and with the general principles of science.' As the eminent geologist Ramsay remarked " we collect the data, and Lyell teaches us to comprehend the meaning of them". Lyell's arguments not only won the day for the uniformitarian philosophy, but generated wide interest in just how much time geologic history might represent.Lyell's wide influence prepared the ground for succeeding accomplishments of the nineteenth century, including those of Charles Darwin, whose ideas on the gradual development of living things could not have flourished without the intellectual framework of vast time which the Lyell's work had made possible. His Principles of Geology "will always rank as one of the classics of geology" and "may be ranked next after Darwin's Origin of Species among the books which exercised the most powerful influence on scientific thought in the nineteenth century." In 1863 Lyell published his book on The Antiquity of Man. The evidence in favour of assigning an extreme antiquity to the human remains found in certain caves and gravels made a deep impression on the public mind. It sold 4000 copies on day of sale, and ran through three editions during the year, and reached a fourth in 1873. "Antiquity of Man, as it was known to contemporary readers, dealt with three scientific issues that had become prominent in the preceding decade: the age of the human race, the existence of ice ages, and Charles Darwin's theory of evolution by natural selection. Lyell used the book to reverse or modify his own long held positions on all three issues."
