Rare and very important Bound Volume of 52 Issues of Harpers Weekly for the year 1864 in OUTSTANDING, CLEAN, CRISP and SIMPLY FANTASTIC CONDITION! This fantastic volume of perhaps the most important 19th century illustrated magazine published in the United States includes some of the most highly sought after images produced during the Civil War including a number of important full page plates by famous American Artists including Winslow Homer. During 1864 Harper's Weekly was almost entirely dedicated to coverage of the Civil War - its Battles, its Heroes, Its Villains, its Political Ramifications and the Human side of this horrific American Conflict with a bit of diversion caused by the Presidential Election of 1864. This volume measures approx. 11 1/2 x 16 and 1 7/8 thick. It is Volume No. VII and contains all 52 issues for the year - each issue is complete with no pages missing, articles clipped, edge wear, tears, foxing, soiling, staining, tears, repairs or damage of any kind. This fantastic, Civil War year of Harpers Weekly contains page after page and illustration after illustration of Battles, Generals, Southern Cities, Military Camps, Black Americana plates, Confederate Army illustrations and everything one would expect from a News magazine during an all encompassing conflict such as the American Civil War. There is very little room in these issues for other American or Foreign news and events but the Re-Election of Abraham Lincoln and the campaign that preceded the election are covered in depth. Of special interest in this volume is the extensive treatment of the Campaigns of General Grant and Sherman's March to the Sea - Harper's had correspondents and artists traveling with the troops and each weekly issue included reports and images from the front). Everything imaginable related to the War can be found in these pages including much on the Navies of the Union and Confederate States, the Battles of the War, Maps and descriptions of many of the important Southern Cities, Troop Movements, Political Cartoons, Commentary, etc., etc., etc. At this point Thomas Nast had became Harper's most prolific War Scene illustrator and the volume is jammed full of Nast illustrations.

This fantastic, 1864 Volume is bound in the publishers blind stamped, gilt decorated cloth covers which are worn at the spine but intact and very attractive. The internal issues as well preserved as we have ever seen in a Volume of Harper's Weekly. The issues are all complete and tight - there are no pages loose, miss folded, torn or damaged in any way. The pages and plates are VERY white and VERY clean with NO age toning, foxing, staining, soiling or discoloration. The sheets are supple and NOT the least bit brittle - there are NO edge chips or edge tears and NO signs of even the slightest amounts of normal wear. All of the central, double page illustrations are bound on a stub and are NOT sewn at the center. This Volume and the other 3 Volumes of Civil War years Harper's Weekly we are selling this week on eBay are simply THE BEST preserved examples we have ever seen or handled in the past 29+ years! The level of preservation is simply stunning! There is some wear to the binding but the interior pages of this fantastic 1864, Harper's Weekly Volume are without flaws!

Important Notes about Shipping Charges and the eBay "Detailed Seller Rating" Star System:

The amount quoted for Shipping & Handling is calculated by eBay and is equal to the EXACT amount charged by the Post Office plus a $1.00 "packing fee" - the $1.00 fee is our only compensation for the virgin packing materials we use on all of our professionally packaged boxes as well as our cost for the salaried help that does most of our packing - as I am sure you can see, we make NO profit on the Shipping charges and, in fact, our costs are usually greater than the $1.00 fee.

We have NEVER requested Feedback from our customers as we were taught that "fishing for compliments" was impolite but the new eBay Detailed Rating System has put us in a rather tight spot. Most buyers are unaware that eBay bases a monthly fee discount on a Seller's "Star" rating. A monthly average of "4.6 Stars" (in any one of the four "Star" categories) costs us approximately $400 in additional eBay Fees - that's $400 above what we would pay if we had a "4.8 Star" average in all 4 "Star" categories! As a consequence we hope you do not find us rude to ask that if you are happy with our items, our service, and our packing & shipping please be sure to use the "Star" rating system and remember that a "5 Star" rating is the only way we can qualify for eBay's fee reduction program.
