1864 HANDWRITTEN DIARY ---------------------- This auction is for an INCREDIBLE 146 YEAR OLD antique diary / journal / manuscript - It was written by a young man by the name of ROBERT H. TOMPKINS and he lived in GORHAM, ONTARIO COUNTY, NEW YORK. I found a wonderful website that gives the interesting history on this village: http://history.rays-place.com/ny/gorham-ny.htm Robert was born on September 11, 1837 and he died on June 17, 1896. His parents were Seaman and Rosanna Tompkins, and he had 4 siblings: Ann, Emily, Sarah, and Seaman. I will include to the winning bidder copies of his census information from 1850, 1870 and 1880. This is a RARE One-Of-A-Kind Slice Of New York & American History !!! This fabulous diary has 357 handwritten entries, plus there are ledger entries on 11 of the back pages. It measures 3 1/4" x 4 3/4" and it is in excellent condition with no loose or missing pages. In the back pocket there is a business trade card for Wm E. Stokoe, Lumber Manufacturer & Wood & Iron Turner ... also 3 pgs of handwritten lyrics to "The Red White & Blue", 1864 Election Tickets (?), and a handwritten court statement/testimony from 1864, a Rare 1864 "United States Express Co." Receipt, two handwritten receipts for the Gorham "Soldiers Aid Fund", and a very Rare Militia Certificate that certifies that "Robert H. Tompkins has been appointed an enrolling officer of the ununiformed Militia of Company 1st Ass. Dist. Ontario Regiment ...." Robert was 26 years old when he began to write in this diary. This is a great diary and he has wonderful handwriting that is easy to read. On his 27th birthday, he writes that he weighs only 82 1/2 pounds! Robert writes of life as it was for him during the Civil War ... He writes of looking for a girl to hire, drinking too much Rum, enrolling in the Militia, letters he writes and receives, having the Phthisic, going to the singing school concert, President Lincoln being re-elected, Emily going to sew for Mrs. Blodget and others, Soldiers remains being brought home, Special Election to Amend the Constitution to allow Soldiers to vote, Diphtheria, having the measles, and so much more! Here Are Some Excerpts From The Diary: Please keep in mind that this is a small portion of the diary and there is much more to read .... "....... Cold with some snow. Went to Bethel both in the forenoon and afternoon, done some collecting for Wm Stokoe, mailed a letter to Seaman, received a letter from John Yeckley .... Aunt Hannah, George and I went to Geneva. Called to Ransoms, Cora has the Diphtheria ....... George came after Emily to go to Ransom's to sit up. Cora died in the evening ....... Johnny Brought the horse and buggy here. I took it and went after Uncle John and Aunt Sally and Father and they went to the funeral of Wm Creeds wife. Emily went to Cora's funeral ....... Cornelia was here and spent the day. Went to Mr. Hershey's in the afternoon. James Moor, Aaron Benjamin, Jacob Green, Wm Hopper and Zinah Buck of the 16th N.Y. Emily went to the Sabbath School Convention held at the Baptist church. Old Mr. Hershey had a shock of the Palsy ....... Went to Bethel in the morning and mailed a letter to Cyrus Ketch. Father went to Geneva. Emily went to Ransoms and spent the day. Frank Yeckley came home and is very sick with the measles and dysentery ..... Tremendous cold. Went to Canandaigua to take the Record and some Chattel Mortgages, went a foot as far as Georges, froze both my ears. He took me from there to the Station, stayed all night to Mr. Palmers ....... A Special Election was for the purpose of Amending the Constitution so as to allow absent Electors in the military service the priviledge of voting. I acted as Clerk of the board of Inspectors ....... Frank Yeckley and I went to Mr. Mapes and spent the afternoon and evening, had all the maple sugar we wished to eat .... Albert Doughty was buried, he died of Diptheria. Mrs Barden died of Appolexy ....... George and I commenced enrolling this town for the State Militia ....... Went to Mr Hersheys in the morning to get shaved. Went to Bethel in the forenoon and spent the afternoon at home in copying the Enrollment. Marcus Pulvers remains were here from the Army. Emily went to the funeral in the afternoon ....... Went to Cornelia's and her and I went to Newton Stanley's, attended a political meeting in the evening. E.M. Morse of Canandaigua addressed the meeting ...... Emily and I went to meeting and Sunday School. Mr. Wisner preached a funeral sermon for a child of John Williams and three of Mrs Williams ....... George came home with me and took dinner then he, Father and I went to the Union meeting. It was held at the Methodist church. Hon. Dan Morris and William H. Lamport were the speakers ...... Went to Election, voted for the Lincoln and Johnson Electors and for Fenton and Alvord for Governor and Liet. Governor and the remainder of the Union Ticket. Came home and got something to eat, then went back and stayed till the votes were canvassed .....
