1867 HANDWRITTEN DIARY Orange Co/Williamstown Vermont Picture(s) and Description:

1867 HANDWRITTEN DIARY ---------------------- This auction is for an AMAZING 143 YEAR OLD antique diary / journal / manuscript ..... It was written by a young woman by the name of ELLA MARTIN (born February 25, 1851) and she lived in WILLIAMSTOWN, Orange County, VERMONT. There is some wonderful historical images of Williamstown given at this link: http://www.comdeals.com/vermont/history.html Ella was a fifteen year old school girl when she began to write this diary .... she was going to school at an Academy, and studying to become a school teacher. She writes of her lessons and of her teachers, and of being examined to obtain her teaching certificate. She was offered her first school house and began teaching when she was just 16 years old! She left home and boarded at many different homes while she was teaching, and she writes of feeling homesick and of missing her mother. She did not like scholars who disobeyed her and if they made her angry enough she gave them nasty whippings! This is a VERY RARE One-Of-A-Kind Window into Vermont & American History !!! Diaries of young one-room school teachers are very difficult to find, but this diary is even more special because it gives a look into the life of a very young girl and the challenges and emotions that she feels when she leaves home and teaches her very first school! Ella expresses her emotions, which is so very rare to find in diaries, especially diaries from the 1860's! Wonderful entries that give an incredible window into her private life as well as into the events that occured between the private walls of a one room school just two years after the Civil War. This diary is very rare and exceptional! It has 198 handwritten entries, and measures 2 1/2" x 4". It is in worn condition, but dooes not appear to have any missing pages. In the back of the diary she lists the names of her 10 scholars. This would be a prize in anyone's collection, it is an amazing piece of historical Americana! Here Are Some Excerpts From The Diary: Please keep in mind that this is a small portion of the diary and there is much more to read .... " ..... I went to church all day. Willie brought me home at noon and carried me back with old Tom .... I was tardy this morning. Did not have as good lessons as usual except in Algerbra. I went up to Grandfathers after school .... We had to recite in philosophia at eight oclock this morning. I did not go up, went up to grandfathers after school. Mr Spaulding has gone to a teachers institute, will not be in school again until Monday .... We had to go up to philosophia at eight oclock this morning. A man came there who with one single lesson would enable us to sketch accurately from nature, terms 2 dollars. Loren, Aunt Marian and mother went to Montpeliar, she bought her crockery and me a book but it was the wrong one .... I went up to the Academy this morning and read my composition. Mr Spaulding let the scholars decide not to have school any longer .... I went to church today, the roads are all ice and between the churches there is a perfect pond of ice and it does not bear, I could not have gotten over if it had not been for Jim Goodrich. He came over with a sleigh and took me across ..... As I went into my room to write my composition, a sad accident happened, I spiled the ink onto the carpet but suceeded in getting it out mostly ..... I moved into the brick house today and we commenced house keeping there, how good it seems to have a home once more, our home out west is sold to day .... Aunt Sarah came up and got my bonnet to fix over. Dr Werthen came up and brought mother bitters this evening ..... Mr. Lathrup came after me at seven o'clock this morning, I began my first school this morning, had eight scholars. I am very tired tonight, think I shall enjoy my school. I went out with my scholars and found many flowers .... I am getting along nicely in school, the only trouble I have is to much time. The committee came and brought me a regulater and broom ..... Had a new scholar today. A.B.D., I like my school, have one scholar I do not know how to manage, W.E.J. has a very sour temper ..... Today seems a long one. I wish I could see Mother and Willie. I feel a touch of homesickness .... It has rained very hard today, had much trouble with A.B.D. - O! for more wisdom and above all things, more grace! .... Mr Lathrup came up to the school house this morning. He told me to use the stick .... I do not feel very well today. Whipped A.B.D. soundly. He was very good afterwards. They say I am getting to be pretty strict, I hope I am ..... Commenced school half past eight and let it out half past eleven, and went fishing with the scholars. Got very much frightened about A.J. She ran off and came near being lost .... I have whipped two boys today but not as hard as I ought, perhaps not as hard as I wish I had .... Two boys were tardy this morn, they went fishing, they got a nice string of fish. I feel most tired today and Mr Lathrup came up for me and I went down there to stay over Sunday .... I have only five scholars today, have done better in school, had more order. A very quiet school, seems lonesome with the boys all gone haying .... I have only three scholars today, it is doubly lonely today, one sick, one sore foot, two haying. I do not know why the other three stay out. I had a fire at school today ....
