kwevans Store The Raven DESCRIPTION: Presented for auction is the original 1888 Edition of “THE RAVEN” by Edgar Allan Poe. This is the very scarce edition illustrated by W.L. Taylor. It is often noted for its musicality, stylized language, and supernatural atmosphere. It tells of a talking raven's mysterious visit to a distraught lover, tracing the man's slow descent into madness. The lover, often identified as being a student, is lamenting the loss of his love, Lenore. The raven, sitting on a bust of Pallas, seems to further instigate his distress with its constant repetition of the word "Nevermore". The illustrations in this book are simply stunning by W.L. Taylor. Taylor combined the best of late Victorian sentimentality with the painstaking attention to detail and design of the Arts and Crafts Movement, and earned for himself the title "the great American master of Symbolism." The book was published by E.P. Dutton & Company. The book measures 6 1/2 x 8 1/4” and is complete with all pages.
