" 1918 HANDWRITTEN DIARY ---------------------- This auction is for an wonderful 92 YEAR OLD antique diary / journal / manuscript - It was written by a man named SAMUEL A. FATE and he lived in EDISON, MORROW COUNTY, OHIO. Here is a wonderful link to the interesting history of this area: http://www.heritagepursuit.com/Morrow/MorChXVIII.htm Samuel was born in 1857 in Maryland. His father was born in Germany, his mother was born in Pennsylvania. His wife was named NETTIE. They had two children together, Oscar and Maud. I will include to the wining bidder copies of his 1900 and 1910 Federal U.S. Census information. The diary measures 3" x 5 3/4" and it has 365 handwritten entries plus in the back there are 19 pages with ledger entries - the entries are lengthy and most fill 3/4 or more of every page! The diary's spine has been repaired with scotch tape and book binding tape. If you like diaries that have a lot to read in them, then this is the diary for you! This Is a RARE One-Of-A-Kind Window Into Ohio & American History! Samuel writes of often going to Gilead, Edison, and other towns on foot, and he does a lot of traveling around the United States! He takes a long trip by trains and writes of going to Pennsylvania, Chicago Illinois, Colorado, Salt Lake City Utah, Iowa, Oklahoma, Arizonia, New Mexico, Texas, Kansas, Missouri, California, etc. Here Are Some Excerpts From The Diary: Please keep in mind that this is a small portion of the diary and there is much more to read .... " .... Rose at five o'clock. Built fires, ate break. Done the feeding, went to mill at Edison with one horse to small sled and three sacks of oats and barley .... I went with Oscars to Cardington to attend Andrew Slaghes funeral .... I hitched to wagon and got a load of wood from 40 acres. It was hard hauling, took it to Edison and brought back a load for Floyd .... Hayes and the girls were over night. I went to Sunday School at nine oclock and came back at eleven o'clock. After dinner we went in machine to Oscar's, came back about five, Hayes along .... Afternoon we went to James on foot for some maple syrup. Rode from there with John. We went to sale at Chris Stockdales, came home at five, chilled with the cold .... Read and talked till dinner and went to funeral of a Mrs. Cook at two o'clock. George and I walked to the cemetery .... Ate breakfast at 7-30 and walked to the station and left for Omaha - the west half of Iowa is fine. Most of it. Got to Omaha at 3:30 and found a place to sleep at Vales hotel, not a very good place. Walked over town some - This is a large and hustling city .....Was at Vales Hotel 510 ten street Omaha over night. Rose seven o'clock and ate breakfast about eight. A small place, and had hot cakes all I could eat (6). The morning is fine. Walked nearly over this town - It is now two and will leave 4-20 for Denver. At sundown we are at Grand Island Nebraska. A large place and a railroad town ..... Rode on Union Pacific train all night, got to Denver at 9-15, found a room, ate breakfast at eight o'clock - Attended 3 nickel shows that were good ..... Was at Brunswick hotel, 17th St Denver Colo. over night. Rose at six o'clock, ate breakfast of six hot cakes at Clayton resturant - Left at 8-15 for Colo Springs - put up at Cheyenne Hotel. A very good room. Got dinner at a very fancy place. Not much to eat. Supper at another. Done a good deal of walking over town, a fine place on account of resorts and sanitariums .... Took walk to S.F. Station and saw train load of 720 soldiers go by - Can see Pikes Peak and other mountains covered with snow. This is a nice place to be but must move on. Arrived at Pueblo at 12-25. Got room at Arcade Hotel and then dinner - Walked through town for more than a mile and back till 4:30. The wind blew a particle in eye that was terrible. Retired about nine o'clock. There is a bible in every room of hotels .... Up in Mountains about sun down, the ground is covered with snow. These are the long rides I don't like .... Rode on train through the night. It was D.R.G. and somewhat bum. Slept some. Washed and ate an apple and some cakes about daylight. We are now passing through a desert of sand gullies and hills. We see piles of sacked wool along railroad. In coming down Mountain, we pass same place three times ..... Rode on sleeper through the night. Got up about five o'clock, ate some grub I had along. We have traveled through the mountains, following a river all fore noon - The road is 100 more feet above water and very crooked and full of tunnels - We passed through Sacramento about one o'clock - got to San Francisco at 6-30. Put up at Winchester Hotel ..... Was at Winchester Hotel 76-3rd St. San Francisco California over night. Rose at seven, took a bath in room. Wrote a letter and then walked till one, to picture show till two. Ate 15 ct. dinner and walked Chinatown for a mile out and back. Rested in small nice part in center of town. Went to 5 ct. picture show - The picture shows are good here although not all five cents .... Left for Oakland over ferry at 10-20 and Oakland at 11-15. Rode afternoon through a nice country of level and rich fruit lands. Rolled around in a day coach through the night and over mountains and hills ..... Was at Jouita Hotel 726 South Spring Road - Los Angeles California over night. Rose about seven o'clock. This place is fine (mean hotel) ...... Rode on Rail road train through the night. Slept pretty good. It is still nearly all desert. It is some past noon and we have about 100 miles to El Paso. At Deming NM is Camp Cody. It looks like lots of soldiers here. Got to El Paso at 4-30 and found the Southern Hotel - This town is full of Mexicans and other forehn people ...... Rode on Rock Island Railroad train through the night. Did not sleep much. Got to Chicago at seven in the morning. Found a room, cleaned up and ate breakfast at eight o'clock - Bought some jewelry for the children. After dinner I went to a Vaudeville show for three hours ..... Went to the R.R. Station to see some Soldier boys off. We had an early dinner and attended decoration exercises, a very large parade, the largest that I ever seen on a decoration. The crowd was also immence ..... Went to Gilead on foot to have war stamps registered. Came back about ten o'clock - Isabel and I saw W.S.S. Ball taken through Edison .....
