Abraham Cowley Complete Works 1672 Royal Society NO RES Picture(s) and Description:

Abraham

Offered with no reserve are the complete “Works” of Abraham Cowley, one of the greatest of 17th century English poets, the third edition, printed in a single folio volume at London in 1672, bound in late 18th or early 19th century half calf (with later cloth covering the spine). The volume is sold not subject to return.   The full title reads as follows:   “The Works of Mr. Abraham Cowley. / Consisting of Those which were formerly Printed: And Those which he Design’d for the Press, Now Published out of the Authors Original Copies. / The Third Edition. … / London, / Printed by J.M. for Henry Herringman, at the Sign of the Blew Anchor in the Lower Walk of the New Exchange. 1672.”   Cowley (1618-1687) occupied a dominant position in the poetic world of the middle decades of the 17th century, and while his reputation dimmed, it remained considerable throughout the 18th century. Indeed, it was Cowley, rather than Donne or Herbert, with whom Samuel Johnson began his monumental ‘Lives of the Poets.’   Amongst his poems, the ‘Davideis’ is perhaps the most ambitious, constituting an epic poem upon King David in four books. His Pindarique Odes were also well regarded, and ‘The Complaint’ had a significant success. His finest poems, though, are his smaller efforts, including his Ode to the Royal Society, and his elegies to Wotton, Falkland, Crashaw and others.   Cowley’s essays have aged very well and remain very highly regarded. His “Advancement of Experimental Philosophy,” intended to promote the protection and preservation of scientific research, was amongst the finest 17th century prose works concerning science, and led directly to the founding of the Royal Society.   The volume is in excellent condition internally, with clean pages, clear print and ample margins throughout. The title page is toned and its top and bottom margins are shorter than the rest of the leaves; it may have been supplied from another copy. There is also light toning and unobtrusive spots or thumbprints upon a few pages. The binding is very solid and in very good condition, with strong hinges and a strong book block. There is minor wear upon the edges and corners, and minor scuffing of the boards. The volume measures 29.9 cm by 19.8 cm by 4.6 cm; each leaf measures 291 mm by 187 mm.   The volume is complete in all respects except that it lacks the portrait and the leaf E1 (pages 9-10). The volume collates [A], B-C4, a-c4, D-Z4, Aa-Zz4, Aaa-Ccc4, Ddd2, A-S4, T2.   In all, a desirable copy of the “Works” of Abraham Cowley, the great English poet and essayist, printed in a single folio volume at London in 1672, bound in late 18th or early 19th century half calf, and offered with no reserve.   Please take the time necessary to review the photos below in order to gain a better understanding of the content and condition of the volumes.
