Aldus Manutius, Cicero, c.OCT. 1521 -NO RESERVE AUCTION Picture(s) and Description:

Cicero, Marcus Tullius: In hoc volumine haec continentur. Rhetoricum ad C. Herennium lib. IIII. M.T. Ciceronis de inventione. [...] de oratore ad Quintum fratrem [...] de claris oratoribus [...] Orator ad Brutum [...] Topica ad Trebatium [...] oratoriae partitiones [...] de optimo genere oratorium praefatio quaedam. Index rerum notabilium. Venetiis [Venice]: in aedibus Aldi, et Andreae Soceri. Ff. [xvi], 245 (register & colophon on recto of fo.245, verso blank), [i] (recto blank). Nineteenth-century ribbed cloth gilt, g.e., bookplate of Jacques Van Wassenhove (inside front cover), [Adams C1677], 8vo, Venice, Aldus, October 1521 (woodcut anchor device on title and repeated on verso of final blank). Second printing of this Aldine edition of Cicero’s rhetorical works, after the first of 1514, both for which it is customary to note Rev. Dibdin’s remarks: A volume, deserving to be possessed if it were only on one account. It is in the preface of this book (copied in this reimpressions of 1521 and 1533) that Aldus tells us of the placard he caused to be stuck up, over the door of his printing office, in which he warned those who came to visit him, “to talk of nothing but business, and to dispatch that business quickly.” Condition Report: Prelims. and first gathering a little lose in binding and skewed from text block; Occasional small barely noticeable tear to outer edge of a few leaves in the preface and index; Spaces for chapter-initials left blank and noted with letter for rubrication but not adorned; Signature “d ii” intact but sans designation & incorrectly foliated as 32 (instead of 26); “d iii” incorrectly foliated as 17 (instead of 27); “d viii” incorrectly designated as “d ii” & incorrectly foliated as 26 (instead of 32); Signature “l i” intact but lacks designator (correctly paginated as fo.81); Stain to center bottom margin across approximately 25 leaves (ff.82-105) & and a lesser staining to same area from fo.135 onward; Marginal notation in ink by hand (ff.111 recto and verso, 122v, 123r&v, 134v, 138r, 141r); & Nick to bottom corner fo.220. Generally very clean and good condition, other than the marginal notations, a corner nick, small light arc of staining in lower blank margins across some leaves and the few imperfections mentioned above. This is NOT a reproduction but a 16th century Aldus Manutius classic for which I invite prospective bidders to shop around and compare prices. I am a dealer closing out my business and am listing a few items WITHOUT RESERVE on eBay. Please look for my other items closing around the end of this auction, as I will combine shipping (except cumulative insurance coverage requested for non-domestic USPS delivery, if any, must be borne by buyer). All buyers must add $15.00 to the bid of at least one of my items for insured/registered/domestic USPS mail (which includes coverage up to the first $10,000.00); but actual S & H fees charged for express or private courier service dispatch & COST for international as you instruct (but please do NOT ask me to falsify shipping manifests, values, etc.). Close-out sales are final, although all costs will be refunded upon return of items, in condition as dispatched within three days of receipt, but only due to a significant inaccuracy in description. Please note: images supplied may display more than one book in a picture, but this listing consists of only one volume (other books are for display purposes, although they may be offered under separate listings).
