MARVELS OF THE NEW WEST A VIVID PORTRAYAL OF THE UNPARALLELED MARVELS IN THE VAST WONDERLAND WEST OF THE MISSOURI RIVER This auction is for an original 1890 EDITION of "MARVELS OF THE NEW WEST" by William M. Thayer, published by Henry Bill Publishing Company. YOU WILL BE AMAZED WITH THIS BOOK! Who would have known the marvels of ancient races; marvels of scenery; marvels of railroading over the highest mountains; marvels of growth; marvels of agriculture; marvels of mining; marvels of stock-raising; and other marvels we need not enumerate here. Nothing but marvels occupy these pages. The most remarkable things of the New West (as it was known in the late 19th century), and not the commonplace is shared with us through a small glimpse! At the time of publication, The West, had larger territory; with, its inexhaustible mines of gold, silver, copper, lead, iron, and coal, its richer lands, more genial and healthier climate, its grander scenery and irrepressible spirit of enterprise. The portions of this great country lies between the Missouri River and the Pacific Ocean, embracing the States and Territories of Kansas, Nebraska, Dakota, Colorado, Wyoming, Montana, Utah, Idaho, Oregon, Washington, Nevada, Arizona, New Mexico, and California. MARVELS OF ENTERPRISE. Including an account of three brothers making their way to the gold fields of California, with ghastly results...hardships and sufferings of the pioneers, described in the story of Mrs. Augusta Tabor...the fate of the buffalo, and the depredations of the Indians...and a description of the Pony Express and freighting teams. In no way can we exhibit the marvel of enterprise to such advantage as by a description of railways through the deepest canyons and over the highest mountains. The prediction from the 1840's, that the time would come when pleasure-seekers would travel in Pullman cars, where then explorers died of hunger, would have been received with derisive laughter. Yet this strange experience has been realized. MARVELS OF STOCK-RAISING. A complete explanation of the stock-raising business and how to undertake it, including the story of one cow's family. The cowboy has long been an American symbol of strength and rugged individualism, but the first cowboys, known as vaqueros, were actually from Mexico. In the 1800s, vaqueros drove their cattle north into America to graze. This practice gave ranchers in Texas ideas of moving herds away from cold weather, toward water sources, and eventually north to railheads so that their cattle could be shipped to eastern markets. MARVELS OF AGRICULTURE. An exposition on the vast agricultural resources of the New West, how these resources are developed, and the principal place of Kansas, the hub of the American Republic, in the production of corn, wheat, and honey. This book does not contain all the marvels of the New West, by any means. It does not contain all of even the marvelous marvels. However, there are enough marvels to satisfy the most incredulous that the New West has been very properly called "WONDERLAND." One feature of this volume is the introduction of the opinions of other men -- men of science, explorers, travelers, pleasure-seekers, and sight-seers generally. This publication offers SIX BOOKS IN ONE VOLUME. It is beautifully ILLUSTRATED with three hundred and seventy-nine fine engravings and maps. Published in 1890, this book is in GOOD CONDITION! especially for being 120 YEARS OLD! The interior is TIGHT, BRIGHT AND CLEAN! There are 715 pages in this 7" X 9 3/4" weighty book. The binding is firm. The cosmetic covers offer rich green color with gilt script and pictorials. There is slight scuffing on the back cover with some shelf wear. The cloth on the head and tail of the spine shows the onset of fraying. Overall, this is a nice book. All edges have an equally attractive marbled print. This book is fascinating from cover to cover. This would make a perfect gift for anyone enthusiastic about the history of the "Old WEST" as there is a clean "Presented to" page. GET IT WHILE YOU CAN!
