A big border is on each board and a smaller within. Both were decorated with different tendril stamps surrounded by nice slater lines. Each volume was provided with a printed label on the spine.The book covers are slightly rubbed and chamfered. The capitals and the hinges of two volumes have some minor defects. The hinge beneath of the last volume is cracked a bit stronger as has some wormholes. The first sides of the first, of the third and the fourth folios have some brown stains, but the text is readable.

Overall, a wonderful preserved copy, whith 16th century style blind stamps.

Description, contents and further information: This is a complete edition of the works written by the Italian Jesuit and professor for theology Francesco Amicus. The edition contains following writings: De Deo Uno et Trio, II: De Natura Angelorum (I & II in the same volume). III: De Ultimo Fine Hominis. IV: De Fide, Spe et Charitate. V: De Iure et Iustitia (IV & V in the same volume). VI: De Augustissimo Incarnationes Mysterio. VII: De Sacramentis in Genere, necnon de Baptismo, Confirmatione, et Eucharistia VIII: De Sacramento Poenitentiae et Extremae Unctionis (VII & VIII in the same volume).The distinctiveness of this first edition is the publication of several parts, which were omitted later on by the censorship. Furthermore, the edition is gorgeously decorated. The first volume contains an engraved frontispiece showing the portraits of twelve emperors and kings of the Holy Roman Empire from the Habsburg dynasty. In the other four volumes seven engraved title vignettes of particular beauty can be found. They show the monogram of Christ, IHS, surrounded by a clutch of angels. Furthermore, the edition is decorated by numerous beautiful woodcut ornaments showing floral embellishments or little scenes in their middle. The frontispiece of the first volume shows in its centre Emperor Ferdinand III riding on a horse in a battle. His portrait is surrounded by the following scenes: Albert I (crowned in 1298) pulled by eagles on a chariot; Friedrich III (crowned in 1314), called the Beautiful, with sceptre and buckler; Albrecht II (crowned in 1438) declared as winner on a battlefield by the angels; Friedrich IV (crowned in 1440), called the Emperor of peace with the stab of Asclepios; Maximilian I (crowned in 1486) in a horse in a battle; Karl V (crowned in 1520) on a horse in a battle too; Ferdinand I (crowned in 1558) glorious over the Turks; Maximilian II (crowned in 1562) on a throne; Rudolph II (crowned 1575) as winner on a throne and Matthias I (crowned in 1612) with a sceptre and a globus cruciger. The middle part is showing the crowning of Ferdinand II in 1619.The first volume of Cursus Theologici was printed in Vienna already in 1630. All the other volumes were published in this complete edition at hand in 1640, thus this is the first edition. Most notably is the fifth volume De Jure et Justitia. This volume was interdicted by the university of Leuven in 1649 and by the Roman church in 1651, when it was planned to republish it. The reason was a little part out of three sentences on self-defense in relation with murder. The permission of printing was given only after this part was revised and adjusted. The first edition at hand, however, contains this part, though it was marked and adjusted. The other volumes deal with the nature of God and the angels.Francesco Amicus is considered as one of the most important catholic theologian of the counter-reformation. He entered the society of Jesu when he was 18 years old in 1596. He worked as professor at the universities of Naples, Aquila and Graz for decades. In Graz he was chancellor of the university too. The complete edition at hand emerged from his teaching and shows how the thinking of catholic theologians was shaped at the beginning and in the middle of the 17th century. All in all, this is a well preserved, wonderful edition of Amicus' complete works with a frontispiece, vignettes and boards,

Auf jedem Deckel finden sich eine grere Bordre auen und eine schmalere innen, die mit unterschiedlichen Rankenstempeln gestaltet wurden. Sie sind von feinen Streicheisenlinien umgeben. Jeder Band wurde mit einem bedruckten Rckenschild versehen. Die Einbnde sind leicht berieben und bestoen. Es zeigen sich kleinere Schden an den Kapitalen bei 2 Bnden, einige kurze Gelenkeinrisse, das hintere Gelenk des letzten Bandes etwas strker eingerissen, vereinzelt Wurmspuren. Die ersten Seiten des ersten, dritten und vierten Folianten braunfleckig, jedoch ohne Beeintrchtigung der Lesbarkeit.

Insgesamt eine wunderbar erhaltene Ausgabe, deren Blindprgungen noch im Stil des 16. Jahrhunderts gehalten sind.

Die Besonderheit dieser Erstausgabe liegt in der Verffentlichung von Passagen, die die Zensur aus den spteren Ausgaben entfernt hatte. Die Ausgabe ist zudem mit prachtvollem Buchschmuck verziert. Der erste Band enthlt ein gestochenes Frontispiz, das die Portrts von insgesamt 12 Knigen und Kaisern des Heiligen Rmischen Reiches aus dem Hause der Habsburger zeigt. In den restlichen vier Bnden finden sich sieben sich wiederholende, gestochene Titelvignetten von besonderer Schnheit. Sie zeigen das von einer Engelsschar umgebene Christusmonogramm IHS. Auerdem ist die Ausgabe durch eine ganze Reihe schner Holzschnitt-Ornamente verziert, innerhalb derer florale Verzierungen oder auch kleine Szenen dargestellt werden. Das Frontispiz des ersten Bandes zeigt in der Mitte Kaiser Ferdinand III. zu Pferd auf einem Schlachtfeld. Um sein Portrt herum finden sich die folgenden Szenen: Albrecht I. (gekrnt 1298) auf einem von zwei Adlern gezogenen Streitwagen; Friedrich III. (gekrnt 1314) der Schne mit Zepter und Schild; Albrecht II. (gekrnt 1438) von Engeln auf dem Schlachtfeld zum Sieger gekrt; Friedrich IV. (gekrnt 1440), der Friedenskaiser mit einem skulapsstab; Maximilian I. (gekrnt 1486) zu Pferd in der Schlacht; Karl V. (gekrnt 1520) ebenfalls zu Pferd in der Schlacht; Ferdinand I. (gekrnt 1558) Sieger ber die Trken; Maximilian II. (gekrnt 1562) auf dem Thron; Rudolph II. (gekrnt 1575) als Sieger auf einem Thron und Matthias I. (gekrnt 1612) mit Zepter und Reichsapfel. Der mittlere Abschnitt oben zeigt die Krnung Ferdinands II. im Jahre 1619. Der erste Band des Cursus Theologici erschien bereits 1630 in Wien als Einzelausgabe. Alle weiteren wurden erst 1640 in der vorliegenden Gesamtausgabe verffentlicht und liegen somit hier in der Erstauflage vor. Werkgeschichtlich ist vor allem der fnfte Band De Jure et Justitia interessant. Als im Jahre 1649 eine Neuauflage der Cursus Theologici erscheinen sollte, wurde dieser Band, zunchst von der Universitt in Lwen und am 18. Juni 1651 auch in Rom, verboten. Der Grund dafr lag in drei Stzen, die mit Ttung verbundene Selbstverteidigung betrafen. Erst nach einer Korrektur der entsprechenden Passagen wurde die Ausgabe zugelassen. In der vorliegenden Erstausgabe sind diese Stellen wohlgemerkt enthalten, sie wurden lediglich mit kleinen eingeklebten Vermerken gekennzeichnet und korrigiert. Die anderen Bnde behandeln die Natur Gottes, errtern das Wesen der Engeln usw.Francesco Amicus gilt als einer der wichtigsten katholischen Theologen der Gegenreformation. Er trat 1596 mit 18 Jahren der Jesuitengesellschaft bei und wirkte jahrzehntelang als Professor an den Universitten in Neapel, Aquila und Graz. In Graz bekleidete er auch das Amt des Universittskanzlers. Die hier vorliegende Gesamtausgabe seiner Werke entstand aus dieser Lehrttigkeit und veranschaulicht wie das Denken katholischer Theologen Anfang und Mitte des 17. Jahrhunderts geformt und ausgebildet wurde. Insgesamt eine gut erhaltene, wunderschne Werkausgabe mit Frontispiz, Vignetten und Einbnden, die auch wegen ihrer prachtvollen Kalbslederausstattung die Zierde Ihrer Bibliothek sein wird.
