Here's a very large and thick old family bible of the 1870's we received recently. This one was published by Holman and Co. and known as a polyglot bible. With only 12 photos to work with we were just able to cover the basic details. The bible is leather covered and has some we'll note below. Contents seem to be complete with 2 color illuminated pages we show in our pictures. There are some full page steel engravings and some other full page woodcut type engravings. There is a portion of the book that contains biblical history with a good group of illustrations within the text as well. There is a marriage page that has not been used, then pages of family reference with marriages, births, deaths, etc that seem to have been well kept. There is a group of family photographs at the back of the book as well. Here are the issues and details. 1. The rear cover is detatched at the hinge, a couple end pages remain attached to the back cover board. 2. The front cover has become detached years ago and someone hand stitched it back into place. 3. Signs of age and wear to the covers and over the binding area though largely intact. 4. The frist few end pages of this book to about the title page are loosening in the binding though still weakly held. 5. The interior contents seem to be VG with slight signs of use and age. 6. The fold out illustration page we show in the photo is somewhat rough on the edges and has some signs of handling and age. 7. There are 12 family photos in the back of the book. 8. The family records are interesting and seem well detailed. It appears that this bible was first owned by a man named Enos Thomas who was born in June of 1801. He married a woman named Martha Stoddard who was born in March of 1804. They were married in Feb of 1825 and apparently lived in Chesterfield NH in their early married years. It appears they had a big family over the years and lived in Berlin VT., and Faystone? Vt. in later years. Enos lived for 80 years and his wife for 87. As best we can determine it appears they had 10 or more children. Their son TrumanF. Thomas was born in May of 1837 and served in the Civil War as an Officer in Co. H of the 11th? Regiment of NH Volunteers. He died in February of 1865 in Danville Virginia "in a rebel prison". The records of this family seem to run up to about 1924, thereafter there are some 1950's entries of minor amount regarding a family named Hodgdon with deaths in 1951 in Concord, NH and 1958 in Franklin, NH. So, a somewhat aged and worn antique family bible with interesting Thomas familycontents and nice array of the type of artwork bibles of this period are noted for. The bible is very large as noted, about 12.25 by 10 inches in face dimension and about 3.5 inches thick. Nice old antique family bible. That's about it. The pictures should be helpful to those having interest. When packed this will weigh about 18 lbs. The lowest rate postal service suited to this huge book is USPS Media Mail where USPS charges for this 12 lb parcel will be $6.67. Ebay will allow Media Mail charges equivalent to 6 lbs or $4.00 so we will be adding the additional $2.67 in postage as a handling fee when the invoice is presented, (so that the total postage and handling charges will equal the correct postage, $6.67). We do not intend to make money on USPS postage service but do wish to receive the actual cost of the postage. We have no packing or handling charge. Extra cost USPS postal services like Postal Insurance, Tracking, or Upgraded postal services are easily available should the winning bidder wish to make arrangements.
