Antique Medical Book Urology/medicine Plates 1726 Rare Picture(s) and Description:

EXCEEDINGLY SCARCE, ORIGINAL 1726 EDITION OF: "A TREATISE OF THE URINARY PASSAGES." This important 18th century treatise was written by William Rutty (1687 1730) and printed for Thomas Worrall, London. Author was a renowned English physician who studied at Leiden under Herman Boerhaave. This is his principal work, which advanced the study of urology. A French Edition was issued in 1746, followed by a Second English Edition in 1750. Rutty discusses the "Description, Powers, and Uses" of the Urinary Passages, "Together with the Principal Distempers that affect them; in particular the Stone of the Kidneys and Bladder". This First Edition is very rare, with no copy having ever been listed in American Book Prices Current. [DNB, XVII, p. 521; Monk's Roll, II, p. 74; Wellcome IV, p. 596]. "The lectures contain a clear statement of the existing knowledge of the subject and relate two interesting cases, one in the practice of John Bamber, lithotomist to St. Bartholomew's Hospital, of calcified concretions in the caecum giving rise to symptoms resembling renal colic and the other of double renal calculus.from a note by Dr. Francis Glisson." [Sir Norman Moore, noted British medical historian]. "William Rutty, M.D. and Secretary to the [Royal] Society from 1727 until his death in 1730, was lecturer in osteology (1721), viscera (1724) and muscles (1728), at Barber Surgeon's Hall." [Human Curiosities and the Royal Society, 1699 1751; John H. Appleby]. Urology is the surgical specialty that focuses on the urinary tracts of males and females, and on the reproductive system of males. Urologists are the medical professionals specializing in the field of urology, who are trained to diagnose, treat, and manage patients with urological disorders. The organs covered by urology include the kidneys, ureters, urinary bladder, urethra, and the male reproductive organs [testes, epididymis, vas deferens, seminal vesicles, prostate and penis]. Both Urologists and General Surgeons operate on the adrenal glands.

In men, the urinary system overlaps with the reproductive system, and in women the urinary tract opens into the vulva. In both sexes, the urinary and reproductive tracts are close together, and disorders of one often affect the other. Urology combines management of medical [i.e. non surgical] problems such as urinary tract infections and benign prostatic hyperplasia, as well as surgical problems such as the surgical management of cancers, the correction of congenital abnormalities, and correcting stress incontinence.

Urology is closely related to, and in some cases overlaps with, the medical fields of oncology, nephrology, gynecology, andrology, pediatric surgery, dermatology, gastroenterology, and endocrinology. As a discipline that involves the study of many organs and physiological systems, urology can be broken down into subfields. At larger centers and especially university hospitals, many urologists sub specialize within a particular field of urology.
