Offered is the very rare and desirable first collected edition of the complete scientific, literary and political works of Benjamin Franklin, printed in three octavo volumes at London in 1806 for J. Johnson et al, and adorned with a frontispiece portrait, three engraved titles and 12 engraved plates, three of which are folding. The only complete copy on ABE at present is selling for $3500.00 US.

THE PLATES ARE RE-ENGRAVINGS OF THE PLATES THAT ADORNED THE ORIGINAL PUBLICATIONS OF FRANKLINS SCIENTIFIC WORKS, INCLUDING HIS EXPERIMENTS ON ELECTRICITY. ALSO PRESENT IS A FINE FOLDING MAP OF THE GULF-STREAM AND THE ATLANTIC COASTS OF NORTH AMERICA AND EUROPE.

The Complete Works, in Philosophy, Politics, and Morals, of the Late Dr. Benjamin Franklin, Now first collected and arranged: with Memoirs of his Early Life, written by himself. / In Three Volumes. / London: / Printed for J. Johnson, 1806.

The set includes all of Franklins scientific works, from his early correspondence with Hans Sloane in 1725, through his experiments of the 1750s concerning electricity. Other scientific works of note concern the Gulf-Stream, the pernicious effects of lead, and water-spouts.

The political works are divided into those written prior to the Revolutionary years, during the years of the American Revolution, and after the Revolution. They include his testimony before the British House of Commons concerning the Stamp Act, his famous pamphlet Plain Truth, his works in support of the Federalists and the Federal Constitution, and his works in opposition to slavery.

Franklins literary works include a collection of the epigrams published in Poor Richards Almanac.

The three volumes are complete in all respects and comprise 440, 468 and 552 numbered pages respectively, plus titles, preliminaries, plates and an index. Each volume measures about 22.5 cm by 14.3 cm by 3.5 cm; each page measures about 211 mm by 132 mm.

The volumes are in excellent condition internally, with clean pages, ample margins and clear, crisp print throughout. The plates are excellent impressions throughout. There is slight foxing and toning of the engraved titles, a few of the plates, and the occasional gathering. The set was previously in the collection of the Cheltenham Public Library, was bound for them, and bears the blindstamps of the Library upon the plates and the occasional page.

The set is bound in full 20th century blue cloth, with the titles in gilt upon the spine. The bindings are in excellent condition and are essentially without wear.

In all, this is a very are and attractive set, complete in all respects, of the first complete collected edition of Benjamin Franklins scientific, political and literary works, printed in three octavo volumes at London in 1806, adorned with a frontispiece portrait and 12 plates, 9 of which are folding, and offered at a reasonable reserve.
