The History and Adventures of the Renowned Don Quixote. Translated from the Spanish of Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra. To which is prefixed, Some Account of the Authors Life. By T. Smollett, M.D. Illustrated with Twenty-eight new Copper-Plates, designed by Hayman, and elegantly engraved. / The Fourth Edition, Corrected. / In Four Volumes. / London, / Printed for W. Strahan, J. and F. Rivington MDCCLXX [1770].

Don Quixote is, of course, often considered the greatest novel ever written; certainly, it is amongst finest works of art ever conceived and composed. Quixote, Sancho Panza, and Dulcinea have become figures of mythical import in Western culture and have, in fact, come to form the foundation of what constitutes Western culture and identity in ways too subtle and myriad to define or enumerate.

Smolletts translation is one of the finest into English, continues to be printed even today, and is entirely accessible and enojoyable throughout, while, as he says, retaining the narrators inimitable self-importance.

The volumes are bound in full 18th century polished calf, contemporary to the time of publication, original in all respects, including the red and green morocco spine labels. The bindings are generally in very good condition. There is light wear at the edges and corners, and the hinges are cracked but holding firmly by the cords, with the exception of the rear board of the fourth volume, which is detached.

Internally, the volumes are in excellent condition, with bright, clean pages, clear print and ample margins throughout. The plates are excellent impressions. There is only the slightest hint of very occasional foxing.

The four volumes are complete in all respects, comprising 28 full-page engraved plates and 293, 314, 331 and 332 numbered pages respectively. Each volume measures 17.0 cm by 11.2 cm by 2.9 cm; each leaf measures 165 mm by 104 mm.

In all, this is a very attractive and desirable edition of Cervantes masterpiece, Don Quixote, in the English translation of Tobias Smollett, printed at London in four octavo volumes in 1770, bound in the original mid 18th century English polished calf, illustrated by 28 full-page plates engraved after Hayman, complete in all respects and offered at a reasonable reserve.

Please take the time necessary to review the photos below in order to gain a better understanding of the content and condition of the volume.
