CIVIL WAR SOLDIER LETTER 34TH MASSACHUSETTS VOLS 1862 Picture(s) and Description:

CIVIL

An original manuscript Civil War soldier's letter with good content. Written by George E. Rice of the 34th Massachusetts Volunteers to his grandfather, dated Camp Worcester, Virginia, September 6 [1862]. In this well written letter, this soldier writes of camp life, his duties in the Commissary Department, other regiments, passing time waiting for his regiment to be assigned to a division. He reports on the second Battle of Bull Run ["untold killed and wounded on both sides"], and "Stonewall" Jackson's movement into Maryland for forage and food "as they are in a starving condition". Prisoners taken by the rebels were being released on parole because they had nothing to feed them. Observations on the many freed Blacks around the camp, sleeping in barrels, the guard putting down "a riot at a negro house...two or three shots fired", lots more. Six pages, size 5 x 8, very good condition and easily readable. A nice Civil War soldier's letter with better than average content. Needs further research. The 34th Massachusetts was later moved to Washington, then to Harper's Ferry, fought at New Market, in the Shenandoah Valley, at Cedar Creek, Petersburg and Appomattox.
