CON DVE INDICI COPIOSISSIMI. Uno delle cose notabli, & l'altro delle figure. IN VENETIA adi 25 Giugno, L'anno 1660.

IN VENETIA: VENICE: Appresso il Nicolini. 1660. [published date: 1660]. Rare Second Edition. Small Folio. 11.5" x 8.25" inches. (LxB). Pp. [i-xii], 1-144 pages. With more than 150+ fine engraved cuts in the text, mostly half-page, some full-page, first published in 1590, this is of one of the greatest illustrated Italian architecture books of the sixteenth century. Every page is illustrated. (Lacks pages145-147) Pp.144-147 an added article on sundials which was not in the 1590 first edition). In the original contemporary full vellum binding. Only the second issue of Rusconi's great work on architecture. Illustrated throughout with very fine architectural engravings, very finely engraved head and tail pieces and fine elaborately decorated capital letters. Rusconi's superb work on the classical elements of architecture is one of the finest examples of the great Italian works on architecture. Rusconi (ca.1520-1587), Palladio's collaborator during the latter's residence in Venice participated in the design of the Doge's Palace and the Palazzo Publico in Brescia. He was also the sole architect for several palaces and churches in Venice. The Rusconi woodcuts are practically unsurpassed in their brilliance and clarity. Most of them were reused from the first edition, but some were re-cut. They incorporate a wealth of detail, from basic construction material to foliage and flowers for ornamentation. The woodcuts illustrate canons of proportion, cross-sections of bridges, the orders of columns, stairways and walls, and hydraulic and mechanical apparatus. There are also woodcuts of laborers performing construction tasks. Millard, Italian No. 120. Fowler 28.1. The woodcut ornamental border of the title page is the same as that in Vitruvius, Venice, 1584 and Alberti, Venice, 1568. A classic work. There are numerous close-up pictures of the contents given below; please click on them for a detailed description (See Scans below). Please take some time to view the 50+ pictures in detail, in order to gain a full idea of the contents and condition.
