VERY RARE, ORIGINAL 1752 EDITION OF: "AN EXHORTATION TO THE INHABITANTS OF THE PROVINCE OF SOUTH CAROLINA". This important 18th century treatise was written by Sophia Hume (c.1701-1774) and printed by Luke Hinde, London. Author was a native of South Carolina and the granddaughter of Mary Fisher, one of the first Quakers to come to Massachusetts in 1656. Following the death of her husband, Sophia Hume became a famous Quaker in her own right. Here she fervently defends her religious faith, confronting those who call her religion "by the hard Name of Heresy," or "ridiculous or absurd." This early work is an important source regarding the persecution of Quakers in the American Colonies, particularly South Carolina. Author penned this famous treatise in 1747 while living in Charleston. This is the First London Edition, and First Edition thus. [I Turnbull 124; Sabin 33780]. "Sophia Hume - granddaughter of the intrepid Mary Fisher, one of the first American Quaker missionaries - became a famous Quaker preacher after the death of her husband. Like many other women converted during the Great Awakening around 1740, she was accused of "Delusion" and "religious Madness." But despite the disapproval of her children and former friends, she traveled extensively for more than thirty years, writing and preaching both in England and the colonies...Among other things, Sophia Hume favored simplicity of dress, women breast-feeding their own infants, and a woman's right to follow her conscience. Hume's rhetoric...helped lay a foundation for political revolution." [Second to None: A Documentary History of American Women, Vol. I; Moynihan, Russett and Crumpacker]. "Though she preached publicly in South Carolina and Pennsylvania, Sophia Hume did not receive recognition as a minister from her monthly meeting in London until later, possibly not until 1763. As early as 1752, though, her utterances settled on two topics: decrying luxury and warning devotees of their dangers...The 'Exhortation', with its parade of long quotations from the learned and its extensive examinations of Scripture, actually conveyed a fairly simple appeal for repentance and reformation, its strength derived from Sophia Hume's lifelong gift for strong phrases and intense, incantational prose." [Notable American Women, 1607-1950, Vol. 2; James, James and Boyer]. Sophia Hume (1701-1774) was a noted American born Quaker minister and writer. A native of South Carolina, her writings evoke heartfelt emotions regarding the persecution she suffered as a result of her Quaker faith. Despite the hardship she endured in her native Provice of South Carolina, she returned there after several years spent in England. Though not reared as a Quaker, she became a devout follower of their principles early on. This work presents an impassioned and articulate defense of those religious convictions. Along with the Baptists [also known as Anabaptists], Presbyterians and Methodists, the Quakers were active religious dissenters in Colonial America. Quakers were also among the earliest settlers of South Carolina, with many emigrating from Barbados and Bermuda. Sparsely kept Quaker records were maintained for the Charleston Meeting from 1680-1786. The meetings were discretely held in private homes until 1715 when a meeting house was built in Charleston. By 1791, there were only 15 members in Charleston, however by then other Quaker meetings had been established elsewhere in South Carolina including Bush River, Newberry County, Cain Creek, and Union County. Condition: Rare book remains in good overall condition [see images]. Covers lacking, spine chipping, couple of dog eared corners, generally clean internally. All in all, this desirable treatise remains very presentable. Volume numbers 150 pages and measures approx 7.75" tall x 5" wide x .5" thick. Quite a find and a very worthy acquisition indeed. Shipping and Payment: Please see our feedback and bid with confidence. For international shipping quote, please contact us. Massachusetts residents must add 6.25% sales tax or include dealer tax resale number. Payment must be received within 10 days after close of auction. Never a reserve and very low opening bid as always. Thanks for your interest and good luck! boysells Store

AMSTELODAMI,_______________________________Apud JANSSONIO-WAESBERGIOS. M. D. C. C. X X I. 1721 ~ THE SECOND EDITION ~ Recent quarter calf binding, small library stamps to title, first few pages browned and with some archival repair to fore-edge, scattered spotting, generally good condition. A quarto volume, it measures approximately 24cm (9½") x 19.5cm (7¾") x 2.5cm (1"). Pagination pp. [12], 188, collated and complete with 45 fine engraved plates. FREDERIK RUYSCH (1638-1731), was a Dutch surgeon and anotomist and professor of anatomy at Leiden and Amsterdam, mastered (and probably invented) a method of minute injection of anatomical structures allowing detailed studies. The recipe for the injected substance has lost, however. He made anatomical investigations, including these valves in the lymphatics, the bronchial arteries, and the vascular plexuses of the heart, and was the first to point out the nourishment of the fetus through the umbilical cord.Ruysch's Observationum anatomico-chirurgicarum centuria contains his practical observations in medicine and surgery, Ruysch presents the results of one hundred studies and illustrates many of them with excellent engravings, many of which are undoubtedly enhanced by his injection techniques. The second part of the work, Museum anatomicum Ruyschianum, is a catalog of the somewhat bizarre specimens in his museum, which proved to be a major international attraction and was purchased and moved to Russia by Peter the Great in 1717. (Heirs of Hippocrates).

~ VERY RARE ~ ABody of Doctrinal Divinity; OR, A System of Evangelical Truths, Deduced from the SACRED SCRIPTURES. ______________By John Gill, D.D.______________VOLUME II.______________LONDON:Printed for the author, and sold by GEORGE KEITH, in Gracechurch Street MDCCLXIX. Condition/Facts: Measures: 8"x10"x2", approx 500pp, Full tooled leather, leather is worn, rounded edges, covers (front - barely) held by the strings, front end papers gone, internally pages are in pretty nice shape, page edges are pretty sharp, occasional minor stains, nice rag paper. This book would be a treasure if restored! John Gill (23 November 1697 – 14 October 1771) was an English Baptist, biblical scholar, "Jehovist", and held to a staunch Calvinistic Soteriology. Born in Kettering, Northamptonshire, he attended Kettering Grammar School where he mastered the Latin classics and learned Greek by age 11. He continued self-study in everything from logic to Hebrew, his love for the latter remaining throughout his life. He preached in the same church as C. H. Spurgeon over one hundred years earlier. Yet most people today have never heard of John Gill. This is unfortunate, since his works contain priceless gems of information that are found nowhere except in the ancient writings of the Jews. Sufficient to say, John Gill probably forgot more about the Bible than any man, now living, knows. God gave him the ability to study as few others have and set down his results in his Expositor. If anyone approaches Bunyan's character, Mr. Valiant for Truth (Jer 9:3), in "Pilgrim's Progress", Gill does. In his biography of John Gill, Augustus Toplady states: "Perhaps, no man, since the days of St. Augustin, has written so largely, in defense of the system of Grace; and, certainly, no man has treated that momentous subject, in all its branches, more closely, judiciously, and successfully. What was said of Edward the Black Prince, "That he never fought a battle, which he did not win"; what has been remarked of the great Duke of Marlborough, "That he never undertook a siege, which he did not carry"; may be justly accommodated to our great Philosopher and Divine: who, so far as the distinguishing doctrines of the gospel are concerned, never besieged an error, which he did not force from its strong holds; nor ever encountered an adversary, whom he did not baffle and subdue.'' Please, check back often for other Old School Baptist or Primitive Baptist items.
