This item is a wonderful, original manuscript of 32 pages, from the archives of Goodspeed's Bookstore in Boston, Massachusetts. This manuscript, identified by Goodspeed as being from Reverend Matthew Bridge, contains two sermons which were delivered in Sudbury, Massachusetts in 1762. The 3x5 inch pages reveal interesting commentary in religious nature. The pages are loose, not outer binding or covers. A few outer pages have text loss, has not been reviewed completely to see if the two sermons are complete. Overall, easily read, penmanship is small and tight. Please review the scans provided..... The Rev. Matthew Bridge was born in Lexington, July 18, 1721, and was the son of Matthew and Abigail Bridge, of that town. He descended from John Bridge, who settled early in Cambridge, and from his son Matthew, who married Anna Danforth, sister of Lt. Gov. Danforth, the original grantee of the territory of Framingham. Mr. Bridge was educated at Harvard College, where he graduated in 1741. He was ordained minister of the First Parish in Framingham, Feb. 19,1745-6, and married, soon after, Anne, daughter of the Rev. Daniel Perkins, of Bridgewater,* by whom he had seven children, three of whom were sons. His ministry in this town, though disturbed at its commencement by serious dissensions, embarrassing to a young man, was marked by uniform firmness, and a spirit of conciliation, which ultimately reinstated, in a good measure, the peace and harmony of the church. Though not distinguished as a preacher, he is uniformly represented as a man of benevolent feelings and attractive manners ; and by a faithful service of his people, he secured a general and lasting attachment. At the breaking out of the war of the Revolution, Mr. Bridge, in common with other clergymen, volunteered his services as chaplain to the American army, which was then stationed at Cambridge. He was known to have given services to General George Washington during the Seige of Boston and the battles at Dorchester Heights While in the discharge of this duty, he was seized with an epidemic disease, which prevailed in the camp ; to which died a week or two after his return home. On September 2, 1775, Rev. Bridge departed this life, in the 55th year of his age. Please view the other historical and Civil War related documents I'll be listing this week.SEE SCAN.I now accept PAYPAL and most other forms of payment.
IN DARKEST AFRICA This auction is for an original 1890 1ST EDITION! of "IN DARKEST AFRICA" by the celebrated explorer, HENRY M. STANLEY. Published by Charles Scribner's Sons, this auction consists of both VOLUME 1 & 2 making it a COMPLETE SET! for just one bid! IT IS AN ADVENTURE STORY OF THE FIRST MAGNITUDE! When we think of Henry Stanley, we think of his assignment to Africa to find the missing explorer DAVID LIVINGSTONE. Stanley found Livingstone, and is famous for having said "Dr. Livingstone, I presume?" upon meeting him. The contents in this book will certainly not disappoint as it contains a full account of Stanley's travels and last African journey (1887-89) in the search, rescue and retreat of Mehmed Emin Pasha, who had been cut off by the Mahdist revolt in the Sudan. Stanely escorted Emin and 1,500 others to the eastern coast. It all began in 1886, Stanley led the Emin Pasha Relief Expedition to "rescue" Emin Pasha, the governor of Equatoria in the southern Sudan. King Leopold II demanded that Stanley take the longer route, via the Congo river, hoping to acquire more territory and perhaps even Equatoria. After immense hardships and great loss of life, Stanley met Emin in 1888, discovered the Ruwenzori Range and Lake Edward, and emerged from the interior with Emin and his surviving followers at the end of 1890. But this expedition tarnished Stanley's name because of the conduct of the other Europeans: British gentlemen and army officers. An army major was shot by a carrier, after behaving with extreme cruelty. James Jameson, heir to an Irish whiskey manufacturer, bought an eleven-year old girl and offered her to cannibals to document and sketch how she was cooked and eaten. Stanley only found out when Jameson had died of fever. Previous expeditions had given Stanley satisfaction, but this one only had caused disaster. Despite the negativity attached to this journey, Stanley helped to put Uganda into the British sphere of influence. Published in 1890, these two volumes are in GOOD+ CONDITION! for their age and especially to be 119 YEARS OLD!!! There are numerous ILLUSTRATIONS & MAPS!!! in both volumes. With the two volumes combined, there are a total of 1,087 fascinating pages. All text block is remarkably neat and clean on tight, bright pages. There are mild, small blemishes. There Both volumes are soundly bound with no loose pages. The exterior covers are a nice vivid green with gilt lettering. Its most notable flaw is the front free endpaper of volume one is partially stuck to the front pastedown endpage. There are map pockets at the back of each volume, filled with ALL 3 MAPS!!! as called for. Although present, there are gentle but clean tears at the deeply creased folds. Despite these minor flaws, these volumes are in very good shape, along with its contents, and would make a nice addition to your library collection; especially since you are getting the complete set so...GET IT WHILE YOU CAN! ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Sir Henry Morton Stanley (1841-1904), British explorer and journalist, opened Central Africa to exploitation by Western nations. Henry Stanley was originally named John Rowland. He was born near Denbigh Castle, Wales, to John Rowland, a farmer, and an unmarried woman. The boy lived with his maternal grandfather until he was about 6, when his grandfather died. The youngster was sent to a workhouse, where he remained until the age of 15, when he ran away. Young Rowland lived on a hand-to-mouth basis with various relatives until he was 18, when he signed on as a cabin boy and shipped to New Orleans. There a cotton broker, Henry Morton Stanley, adopted him and gave him his name. Stanley's adopted father died without providing for him. The young man volunteered as a Confederate soldier and was captured at Shiloh. He was released from prison by changing sides and finished the war in the Union Navy. After the war Stanley became a newspaper correspondent. He covered Indian campaigns in the American West. In 1868 he went to Abyssinia to cover a British expedition. In 1869 the publisher of the New York Herald commissioned Stanley to find Dr. David Livingstone, a Scottish missionary explorer, lost somewhere in Central Africa. Stanley found Livingstone at Ujiji in 1871 after an 8-month search. They did some exploring together, and when Livingstone died in 1873, Stanley stepped into his shoes. In 1874 Stanley began a 3-year journey to measure the lakes of Central Africa. From 1879 to 1884 he opened the Congo River Basin and laid the groundwork for the Congo Free State after setting up 21 trading posts along the river. Between 1887 and 1890 he led a mission to rescue Emin Pasha, the governor of Equatoria. Stanley settled the question of the source of the Nile and opened a vast territory which accelerated the desire of European countries to control African soil. GOOD LUCK!!!
VERY RARE, ORIGINAL 1633 EDITION OF: "MARI LIBERO." This important 17th century treatise was written by Hugo Grotius and printed by Elzevir [also Elzevier] at Amsterdam, The Netherlands. The legendary Elzevir family of Dutch booksellers, publishers and printers are best known for their pocket-sized editions of the classics and important historical works. Hugo Grotius was the leading jurist of his time and one of the most important legal authorities in the history of law. He is widely considered as the founder of a systematic modern doctrine of international law. Main title "Mari Libero" is bound with three other works; "De Maribus" by Paulus van Merula [Merel], "Apologia Pro Navigationibus Hollandorum, Adversus Pontum Heuterum" by noted Dutch scholar Marcus Zuerius van Boxhorn, and "Tractatus Pacis, Mutui Commercii, Sive Intercursus Navigationum, Confirmatus Londino Anno, Inter Henricum Septimum Angliae Regem, & Philippum Archiducem Austriae, Burgundiae, &c.". Grotius’s famous essay is complemented by those of Merel and Boxhorn, while a treaty between the King of England and the Holy Roman Emperor is appended to the latter essay. [Ter Meulen and Diermanse, Bibliographie de Grotius 545. Dekkers, Bibliotheca Belgica Juridica 25 (1), 69 (3), 115 (4)]. "Mari Libero" ["The Free See"] contains a portion of Grotius's classic work on international law, the subject for which for which he is best remembered. The present treatise was originally published in 1609 as a key chapter in "De Jure Praedae" ["On the Right of Capture"]. Grotius employs a sophisticated argument based on natural law while arguing for the free navigation of the seas. Moreover, he defends the actions of Dutch fishermen, who were attempting to operate near the English coast, and the Dutch East India Company, which was engaged in a territorial dispute in the Caribbean with Portuguese traders. Thus, while Grotius formulated the new principle that the sea was international territory and all nations were free to use it for seafaring trade, he also provided suitable ideological justification for the Dutch breaking up of various trade monopolies through its formidable naval power. "Hugo Grotius, justly regarded as the founder of modern international law, was the most remarkable man of the age in which he lived - an age distinguished for men and genius of learning...[Grotius] is universally regarded as the great master-builder of the science of international jurisprudence. In addition to his reputation as a writer on public law, he was almost equally distinguished as a statesman, diplomatist, historian, and theologian, and as a practical lawyer and eloquent advocate....Grotius wrote during the Thirty Years' War - that fierce struggle for religious and political liberty which was terminated a short time after his death by an honorable peace, based upon the principles which he had so ably and earnestly advocated." [Halleck's International Law, Vol. I]. "Grotius (1583-1645) may be regarded as the Descartes of legal philosophy. As the Cartesian 'cogito ergo sum' became the point of departure of rationalistic philosophy, so the establishment of government and law upon reason made Hugo Grotius the founder of an independent and purely rationalistic system of natural law...According to Grotius, 'natural law' is unrelated to the will and existence of God; for the State is a human institution and is based upon contract." [The World's Legal Philosophy's, Fritz Berolzheimer]. "The great exponent of the principles of modern international law, and the first to arrest the attention of the whole civilized world upon the matter, was Hugo Grotius...Grotius was a profound as well as a versatile scholar, and brought to his writings not only great learning but a deep and passionate love of justice and humanity." [Outlines of International Law, Charles H. Stockton]. Hugo Grotius (1583-1645), also known as Huig de Groot or Hugo de Groot, worked as a jurist in the Dutch Republic. He was also a philosopher, theologian, Christian apologist, playwright, and poet. Along with Francisco de Vitoria and Alberico Gentili, Grotius laid the foundations for international law, based on natural law. Grotius's influence on international law is paramount, and is acknowledged by, for instance, the American Society of International Law, which holds an annual series of Grotius Lectures. Grotius studied at the University of Leiden and became a lawyer at just 15 years of age. In Dutch political affairs, Grotius supported Oldenbarneveldt against Maurice of Nassau. After Maurice gained power he had Grotius condemned to prison for life (1619), but Grotius made a daring escape in 1621 and fled to Paris. There, expanding certain views he had earlier recorded but never published, he wrote "De jure belli ac pacis" [concerning the law of war and peace] (1625), generally considered the first definitive text on international law. In it, Grotius contended that natural law prescribes rules of conduct for nations as well as for private individuals. He derived much of the specific content of international law from the Bible and from classical history. Although he did not condemn war as an instrument of national policy, he maintained that it was criminal to wage war except for certain causes. Much of his book is an attempt to make the conditions of warfare more humane by inducing respect for private persons and their property. Grotius returned briefly to Holland in 1631, but was forced to flee in 1632. From 1635 to 1645 he represented Sweden at the French court. Although widely regarded as the founder of international law, and rightly so, Grotius was indebted for much of his work to earlier scholars such as Gentili. Grotius was also a leading student of theology and biblical criticism, and he wrote an authoritative account of contemporary Dutch political affairs. Grotius' influence on both philosophers and men of action is immeasurable. The Swedish King Gustavus Adolphus is said to have kept a copy of his "De jure belli ac pacis" under his pillow, next to the Bible. Grotius’ greatest impact was on other scholars. Pierre Bayle called him "one of the greatest men in Europe." Gottfried Leibniz hailed "the incomparable Hugo Grotius." Thomas Reid spoke of "the immortal Hugo Grotius," Francis Hutcheson drew on him extensively, and David Hume cited an argument of his about the origins of property in the third appendix of his second Enquiry. His critics included Jean-Jacques Rousseau, Voltaire and the natural law theorist Samuel Pufendorf. Early modern moral philosophy was dominated by the ethics of natural law. Grotius remained the major natural law theorist until he was displaced by Immanuel Kant’s moral philosophy and rewriting of the history of ethics. He removed natural law from the jurisdiction of moral theologians and made it the business of lawyers and philosophers. While Grotius recognized divine will in natural law, his theory asserted that by their very nature, natural laws were authoritative in themselves, with or without faith in God. He also compiled and systematized the practices of “just war” around principles based on natural law. In politics, Grotius gave rise to a theory of statehood and the relations among states, which conceived of states as existing in an international society governed by a system of norms that were authoritative in themselves, and not dependent on the action of a legislature or legislator. At the same time, his theory recognized that individual states would engage in the pursuit of their own perceived interests, regardless of whether such pursuits place them in conflict with the natural law, allowing for the negotiation of a middle way. Paulus van Merula (1558-1607) was born in the Dutch city of Dordrecht. He began his studies in 1578 at the University of Leiden and later went to Orléans en Genève to complete his education. After practicing as an advocate in Leiden he became an esteemed Professor of History at Leiden in 1593 succeeding the famous Lipsius. In 1598 he took on the position of Library Director of the Academia Lugduno-Batava as well as becoming official historian of the Netherlands. Merula died unexpectedly during a visit of Rostock [Germany]. Marcus Zuerius van Boxhorn (1612-1653) was a renowned Dutch historian, linguistics scholar and historical writer. Born in the southern Netherlands city of Bergen op Zoom, Boxhorn became a Professor at the University of Leiden. He was particularly esteemed in the area of linguistics and is credited with discovering the similarity between Indo-European languages. He supposed the existence of a common primitive tongue, which he termed "Scythian." Boxhorn included in his hypothesis Dutch, Greek, Latin, Persian, and German, later adding Slavic, Celtic and Baltic languages, while excluding languages such as Hebrew.
EXCEEDINGLY SCARCE, ORIGINAL 1611 EDITION OF: "HISTOIRE D'UN VOYAGE FAIT EN LA TERRE DU BRESIL, AUTREMENT DITE AMERIQUE. ["HISTORY OF A VOYAGE TO THE LAND OF BRAZIL, ALSO CALLED AMERICA."]." This important 17th century treatise was written by Jean de Léry and printed by Jean Vignon, Geneva, Switzerland. Author was a noted French explorer, best known his early travel to South America. The present treatise contains Léry's famous account of his trip to Brazil in the late 16th century, and his experiences there among the Tupinamba Indians. Historically significant treatise is considered a cornerstone work on the early history of Brazil and its indigenous people. This classic text is paraphrased in Part III of De Bry's Great Voyages, and pages 401-433 contain an account of colloquium between the French and the natives in their respective languages. Volume is rare. To our knowledge, all other known copies of this early [5th] edition are institutionally held. Rio de Janeiro had been occupied by French settlers when it was chosen by the French seaman Nicholas Durand de Villegaignon as a place of refuge for the persecuted Huguenots. Fellow French explorer and Franciscan priest André Thevet was part of the 1556-1558 expedition, along with Léry, and furnished an account which preceded Léry's. The present treatise by Léry corrects many of Thevet's purported falsehoods, and is considered a far more reliable and accurate account. Soon after the Huguenots settled in Rio, Villegaignon's treachery was expected as he challenged their beliefs and renewed Roman Catholic tyranny and oppression of the Huguenots in their new land, France Antarctique. Many returned to France and the Portuguese attacked and destroyed the remnant of the colony in 1560. Jean de Léry (1536-1613) was a noted explorer, writer and Reformed Pastor born in Lamargelle, Côte-d'Or, France. Little is known of his early life; and he might have remained unknown had he not accompanied a group of Protestants to their new colony on an island in the Bay of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The colony, France Antarctique, was founded by the Chevalier de Villegaignon, with promises of religious freedom, but on arrival, the Chevalier contested the Protestants' beliefs and persecuted them. After eight months the Protestants left their colony and settled on the mainland, near the Tupinamba Indians. These events were the basis of the present treatise. Throughout this book, Léry describes his fascinating voyage across the Atlantic to Brazil. On the way he encounters never before seen ocean wildlife that foreshadows many more discoveries to follow. While on the ship he and his men develop new skills of judging and navigating the winds, stars, currents, and tides. Upon arrival, Léry and his men are exposed to what seems to be an entirely new world. Throughout the body of the work, the crew encounters a wide variety of people in an area not yet affected by European colonization. With the main goals set at Protestant Reformation, these men face many more challenges than expected, however make discoveries and encounter new things beyond their wildest dreams. On his return to France, de Léry married unhappily and became a Protestant minister. He endured the Siege of Sancerre, remarking in his book, "History of the City of Sancerre" (1574) that his hardships in Brazil served him well, because he taught his fellow soldiers to make hammocks and eat anything, including shoe soles [though cannibalism still repelled him]. Brazil ["Brasil" in Portuguese], officially known today as the Federative Republic of Brazil, is the largest country in South America and the only Portuguese-speaking country on that continent. It is the fifth largest country in the world by geographical area, occupying nearly half of South America, and also the fifth most populous country in the world. Bounded by the Atlantic Ocean on the east, Brazil has a coastline of over 7,491 kilometers (4,655 miles). It is bordered on the north by Venezuela, Guyana, Suriname and the French overseas department of French Guiana; on the northwest by Colombia; on the west by Bolivia and Peru; on the southwest by Argentina and Paraguay and on the south by Uruguay. Numerous archipelagos are part of the Brazilian territory, such as Fernando de Noronha, Rocas Atoll, Saint Peter and Paul Rocks, and Trindade and Martim Vaz. Brazil was a colony of Portugal from the landing of Pedro Álvares Cabral in 1500 until its independence in 1822. Initially independent as the Brazilian Empire, the country has been a republic since 1889, although the bicameral legislature, now called Congress, dates back to 1824, when the first constitution was ratified. Its current Constitution defines Brazil as a Federal Republic. The Federation is formed by the union of the Federal District, the 26 States, and the 5,564 Municipalities. Brazil is today the world's eighth largest economy at market exchange rates and the ninth largest by purchasing power parity. Economic reforms have given the country new international recognition. It is a founding member of the United Nations and the Union of South American Nations. A predominantly Roman Catholic, Portuguese-speaking, and multi-ethnic society, Brazil is also home to a great diversity of wildlife, natural environments, and extensive natural resources in a variety of protected habitats.
GENUINELY SCARCE, ORIGINAL 1650 ELZEVIR EDITION OF: "VALERII MAXIMI DICTORUM FACTORUMQUE MEMORABILIUM LIBRI IX". This important 17th century treatise was written by Valerius Maximus and printed by Elzevir [i.e., Elzevier] at Amsterdam, The Netherlands. The legendary Elzevir family of Dutch booksellers, publishers and printers are best known for their pocket-sized editions of the classics and important historical works. Early text contains Elzevir's First Edition of author's principal work, "Factorum et Dictorum Memorabilium" [i.e., "Memorable Deeds and Words"], comprising several tales from ancient Rome. Influential treatise was one of the most widely read texts throughout the Middle Ages and Renaissance, and it remains a vital source for ancient Roman times. This popular title was issued twice by Ezevir in 1650, and again in 1671. Important treatise offers "unique access to the Roman moral tradition. This work is an extensive selection of nearly one thousand traditional Roman exempla, organised within categories of vice and virtue according to various moral and rhetorical principles in order to inspire the reader to moral growth." [Sexual Morality in Ancient Rome, Rebecca Langlands]. "There are more surviving medieval and Renaissance manuscripts of Valerius Maximus than any other prose author of the ancient world...Medieval and Renaissance Europe seem to have learnt more about ancient Rome from Valerius than any other classical author, and his influence in that period has been characterized with authority as second only to the Bible (Niebuhr, 1849, vol. II, p. 93)." [Practical Ethics for Roman Gentlemen: The Work of Valerius Maximus, Clive Skidmore]. "There is scarcely any ancient book which is so little quoted in ancient or mediaeval times as the two books of M. Velleius...No book, on the other hand, was more popular than the collection of memorable words and deeds by Valerius Maximus...". [A History of Latin Literature from Ennius to Boethius, Vol. I, George Augustus Simcox]. "Valerius (Valerius Maximus) (c.AD 20) Wrote a history of the 'memorable deeds and words' of the Romans dedicated to Emperor Tiberius. His sources include Livy, Cicero, Varro, Trogus Pompeius. His compilation was widely admired and used during during the Middle Ages as a source of exempla." [The Book of Body Politic, de Pisan and Forhan]. Valerius Maximus was a famous Latin writer during the reign of Tiberius, and author of a collection of historical anecdotes. Little is known of his life except that his family was poor and undistinguished, and that he owed everything to Sextus Pompeius (consul AD 14), proconsul of Asia, whom he accompanied to the East in 27. Pompeius was the center of a literary circle to which Ovid belonged; he was also an intimate friend of the most literary prince of the imperial family, Germanicus. His attitude towards the imperial household has often been misunderstood, and he has been represented as a mean flatterer of the same type as Martial. If the references to the imperial administration are carefully examined however, they will be seen to be extravagant neither in kind nor in number. Few will now grudge Tiberius, when his whole action as a ruler is taken into account, such a title as "salutaris princeps", which seemed to a former generation a specimen of shameless adulation. The few allusions to Caesar's murderers and to Augustus hardly pass beyond the conventional style of the writer's day. The only passage which can fairly be called fulsome is the violently rhetorical tirade against Sejanus. The style of Valerius's writings seems to indicate that he was a professional rhetorician. In his preface he intimates that his work is intended as a commonplace book of historical anecdotes for use in the schools of rhetoric, where the pupils were trained in the art of embellishing speeches by references to history. According to the manuscripts, its title is "Nine Books of Memorable Deeds and Sayings". The stories are loosely and irregularly arranged, each book being divided into sections, and each section bearing as its title the topic, most commonly some virtue or vice, or some merit or demerit, which the stories in the section are intended to illustrate. Most of the tales are from Roman history, but each section has an appendix consisting of extracts from the annals of other peoples, principally the Greeks. The exposition exhibits strongly the two currents of feeling which are intermingled by almost every Roman writer of the empire - the feeling that the Romans of the writer's own day are degenerate creatures when confronted with their own republican predecessors, and the feeling that, however degenerate, the latter-day Romans still tower above the other peoples of the world, and in particular are morally superior to the Greeks. The author's chief sources are Cicero, Livy, Sallust and Pompeius Trogus, especially the first two. Valerius's treatment of his material is careless and unintelligent in the extreme; but in spite of his contusions, contradictions and anachronisms, the excerpts are apt illustrations, from the rhetorician's point of view, of the circumstance or quality they were intended to illustrate. And even on the historical side we are indebted to Valerius. He often used sources now lost, and where he touches on his own time he affords us some glimpses of the much debated and very imperfectly recorded reign of Tiberius. He is also a typical example of the literary period known as Silver Latin. In Valerius are all the rhetorical tendencies of the age. Direct and simple statement is avoided and novelty pursued at any price. The diction is like that of poetry; the uses of words are strained; metaphors are invented; there are startling contrasts, innuendoes and epithets; variations are played upon grammatical and rhetorical figures of speech. In the manuscripts of Valerius a tenth book is given, which consists of the so-called "Liber de Praenominibus", the work of some grammarian of a much later date. The collection of Valerius was much used for educational purposes, and its popularity in the Middle Ages and Renaissance is attested by the large number of manuscripts in which it has been preserved. Condition: Rare book remains in very good condition [see images]. Volume nicely bound in contemporary vellum with old hand titling to spine; light cover wear, some toning, occasional underscoring, etc, generally clean internally. Text in Latin. Volume numbers 328 pages with fine engraved title page and additional preliminaries; and measures approx 4.75" tall x 2.75" wide x 1" thick. Quite a find and a very worthy acquisition indeed.
