George Herbert The Temple Sacred Poems 1638 Rare Picture(s) and Description:
Offered is one of the most beautiful and greatest collections of poetry ever printed in English, The Temple, by George Herbert, printed in duodecimo at London in 1638, bound in contemporary calf. This is the fifth edition, printed five years after the first. All early editions of The Temple are very scarce and sought-after particularly those of the 1630s.
The Temple. Sacred Poems and Private Ejaculations. By George Herbert, late Oratour of the Universitie of Cambridge. The fifth edition.
Harold Bloom refers to Herbert as the devotional poet proper in English; he ranks Herbert amongst the five greatest poets of the greatest age of English poetry, with Shakespeare, Donne, Milton and Marvell.
Herberts poems are devotional in nature, but they are not poetic works of theology they are about humanity in worship, and they celebrate the modes, manifestations and effects of the worship of God.
A very fine example is the following poem, Prayer:
Prayer the Churchs banquet, Angels age, /
Gods breath in man returning to his birth, /
The Christian plummet sounding heaven and earth; /
Engine against the Almighty, sinners tower,/
Softness, and peace, and joy, and love, and bliss, /
Church-bells beyond the stars hear, the souls blood, /
The volume is bound in full 17th century dark brown polished sheepskin with blindstamped borders and cornerpieces. The volume was rebacked to style during the 20th century, with the title, author, and year of publication upon the spine. The binding is very solid and shows very little wear upon the spine.
Internally, the volume is in very good condition. The first and final few leaves are notably toned and a little worn at the edges. There is occasional spotting and there are occasional instances of restoration, never affecting the text. The volume presents quite attractively overall, and is complete in all respects; it measures 15.5 cm by 8.9 cm by 1.8 cm; each page measures 150 mm by 86 mm. The volume comprises 192 numbered pages, plus the title, preliminaries and index, and collates [4], A-H12, I2.
In all, a very attractive and extremely desirable copy of the 1638 edition of George Herberts The Temple, one of the greatest volumes of poetry in English, bound in 17th century sheep and offered with no reserve.
