Godolphin Repertorium Canonicum 1680 Church & State Picture(s) and Description:

Godolphin

5. Offered with no reserve is a rare copy of the improved second edition of John Godolphin’s “Repertorium Canonicum; or An Abridgment of the Ecclesiastical Laws of this Realm,” printed in quarto at London by Roycroft for Wilkinson in 1680, and bound in the original late 17th century English calf. This work is a classic of ecclesiastical law, and one of the first to bridge the differences between ecclesiastical law and the common law. This copy is ex-libris St. Deiniol’s in Hawarden, England.   The “Constitutions and Canons Ecclesiastical” are a translation of the Latin “Constitutiones sive Canones Ecclesiastici.” These “Constitutions and Canons” were a collection of rulings given the force of canon law, although not in themselves constitutive of canon law. The ‘treatment’ or explanation of each specific ruling defines the ruling in greater detail, gives the reasons for the ruling, and gives prominent circumstances where the ruling ought to be applied.   This important and extensive work summarises the Ecclesiastical Law of the Church of England as it stood in the late 17th century, in relation to English Common Law of the same period.   SECOND AND AUGMENTED EDITION OF WHAT HOLDSWORTH DESCRIBES AS “ONE OF THE FIRST REALLY ABLE BOOKS UPON ECCLESIASTICAL LAW.” THIS WORK WAS ESSENTIAL TO SETTLING CONFLICTS IN THE LATE 17TH CENTURY BETWEEN THE COMMON LAW AND ECCLESIASTICAL LAW, MANY OF WHICH HAD ARISEN FROM THE CHANGES WROUGHT BY THE CIVIL WAR AND COMMONWEALTH PERIOD OF THE 1640s and ‘50s.   The full title reads as follows:   “Repertorium Canonicum; or An Abridgment of the Ecclesiastical Laws of this Realm, Consistent with the Temporal: Wherein The most Material Points relating to such Persons and Things, as come within the Cognizance thereof, are succinctly Treated. / The Second Edition Corrected: / Whereunto is added An Appendix. / … By John Godolphin, LL.D. / London, / Printed by S. Roycroft, for Christopher Wilkinson at the Black-Boy against St. Dunstan’s Church in Fleetstreet, 1680.”   The volume is complete in all respects and comprises 652 numbered pages plus the imprimatur, title, index and 20-page appendix; the volume collates A-Z4, Aa-Zz4, Aaa-Zzz4, Aaaa-Zzzz4, Aaaaa-Hhhhh4. The volume measures 23.3 cm by 17.7 cm by 4.9 cm; each leaf measures 226 mm by 170 mm.   The volume is in very good condition internally, with generally clean pages, and with clear print and ample margins throughout. The imprimatur, title and final leaf show light toning and staining; the same leaves bear the small, unobtrusive stamp of St. Deniol’s Library. A few leaves have partially sprung, causing slight wear at their outer edges.   The volume is bound in the original late 17th century English dark brown calf The binding is in very good condition, with minor to moderate wear at the edges and corners, as may be seen in the photos below.  The hinges are strong and the book block is solid.   In sum, this is an attractive, complete and quite scarce copy of the 1680 edition of Godolphin’s “Repertorium Canonicum,” expanded by the addition of a 20-page appendix, printed at London in quarto, of great importance to the resolution of conflicts in the late 17th century English Common Law and Ecclesiastical Law, complete in all respects, bound in the original late 17th century English calf, and offered with no reserve.   Please take the time necessary to review the photos below in order to gain a better understanding of the content and condition of the volumes.
