LeGrand The Divine Epicurus 1676 DesCartes 1ST NO RES Picture(s) and Description:

LeGrand

3. Offered with no reserve is the rare first edition of Edward Cooke’s translation of the French Cartesian philosopher Antoine LeGrand’s “The Divine Epicurus,” printed at London by H. Bruges for M. Widdows in octavo in 1676, complete in all respects, and bound in late 17th or early 18th century maroon morocco paneled in gilt. The book is ex-libris the Society of Saint John Evangelist (Marston Street, Oxford) and may be referenced as Wing L949.   THE RARE FIRST EDITION OF THIS WORK BY THE CARTESIAN PHILOSPHER LEGRAND.   The full title reads as follows:   “The Divine Epicurus, or The Empire of Pleasure over the Vertues. Compos’d By that Most Renown’d Philosopher, / Mr. A. LeGrand; / And Rendred into English by Edward Cooke, Esq; / …London, / Printed by H. Bruges for M. Widdows at the Green-Dragon in St. Paul’s Church-yard, / 1676.”   LeGrand (1629-1699) was a Franciscan Recollect friar and firm adherent of DesCartes’ mechanism. He was also greatly influenced by Seneca and Epicurus, and spent much of his intellectual effort striving to reconcile DesCartes with the two classical philosophers. LeGrand is particularly noted for having made the works of DesCartes conform to a Scholastic form. He did battle with the Cambridge Platonists in the 1660s and 1670s, and with the metaphysicians of Oxford (who equated the mechanism of DesCartes with that of Hobbes) from the 1670s through to the end of his life. Prominent amongst his adversaries were Samuel Parker and John Sergeant.   The volume is complete in all respects and comprises 128 numbered pages plus the title and preliminaries; the volume collates A4, B-I8. Each leaf measures 148 mm by 96 mm.   The volume is in very good condition internally, with light toning at page-edges and with very light marginal dampstaining toward the rear of the volume, not affecting the text. The binding, while of a fairly attractive design, is worn with both boards detached, as may be seen in the photos below.   In all, a good, complete copy of a very rare work of no little importance, the first edition of Le Grand’s “The Divine Epicurus,” printed in octavo at London by Bruges for Widdows in 1676, bound in the original late 17th century maroon morocco gilt, and offered with no reserve.   Please take the time necessary to review the photos below in order to gain a better understanding of the content and condition of the volumes.
