Offered with no reserve is the very rare first edition of Edward Leigh’s (Legh) great “Critica Sacra,” concerning the Hebrew words of the Old Testament, printed in quarto at London in 1641 and bound in the 17th century calf. This copy is ex-libris St. Deiniol’s Library (founded by William Gladstone). The book may be referenced as Wing L-988.   THE VERY RARE FIRST ISSUE OF THE FIRST EDITION (WITH THE 1641 DATE) OF THIS IMPORTANT STUDY OF THE HEBREW WORDS OF THE OLD TESTAMENT.   The full title reads as follows:   “Critica Sacra. / Observations On all the Radices, or Primitive Hebrew words of the old Testament in order Alphabeticall, Wherein both they (and many derivatives also issuing from them) are fully opened out of the best Lexicographers and Scholiasts. / By Edward Legh, Esquier, Mr. of Arts of both Universities. / … London Printed by G.M for Thomas Underhill at the signe of the Bible in Wood-street. 1641.”   Leigh himself states that his intention in this work is as follows:   “not in this... to explaine every Hebrew word in the Old Testament, except the proper names, but all the Radicals or Primitive words onely.”   Lowndes (II at 1337-38) states that “succeeding lexicographers of the Old and New Testaments have been greatly indebted to Leigh.”   Leigh’s great work is fundamentally an annotated bibliography for biblical Hebrew. Words are listed alphabetically, with the Hebrew followed by the Latin equivalent. An English explanation of usage then generally follows.   The volume is complete in all respects, including the errata leaf and comprises 573 numbered pages plus the title, preliminaries and index; the volume collates A8, a1, B-Z8, Aa-Oo8, Pp-Tt4. The volume measures 19.0 cm by 14.8 cm by 4.9 cm; each leaf measures 183 mm by 140 mm.   The volume is in excellent condition internally, with clean pages, clear print and ample margins throughout. There is very light toning at the page edges, and very minor wear upon the outer edge of the title page.   The binding is of 17th century calf, rebacked in the 20th century. The spine is divided by raised bands into 6 compartments, with an attractive red morocco title label upon the second compartment from the head. The hinges and the book block are very strong. There is essentially no wear upon the spine, and only minor wear upon the edges and corners. The endpapers are attractively marbled.   In all, this is highly desirable and very rare copy of the first edition of Edward Leigh’s “Critica Sacra,” concerning the Hebrew words of the Old Testament, a foundational work of Hebrew biblical lexicography, complete in all respects, bound in late 17th century calf and offered with no reserve.   Please take the time necessary to review the photos below in order to gain a better understanding of the content and condition of the volumes.
