Manuscript Book of Hours – Large format – France 1450 Picture(s) and Description:

Manuscript

Description: Richly ornate handwritten french book of hours. Includes 11 great fullpage miniatures ! Every second page with floral illuminations surrounding the text. Anonymus – Handwritten Book of Hours in Latin. 182 vellum leaves. Made in the North of France around 1450. Extremely rare example for the art of book desing between the late Middle Ages and the early modern times. ________________________________ Book of Hours / Livre d‘heurs, North of France, around 1450. Format: 8to (8.5 x 6 inches). Modern Vellum binding. Binding stained but otherwise in very good condition. Vellum leaves nicely preserved. Some pages soiled or with light water stains at margin. All colors and illuminations in wonderful condition, colors fresh and bright. Today, manuscripts of this kind are hardly ever available, especially with such a large number of oppulent illuminations and miniatures. The book contains overall 182 vellum leaves. The text was written in a large French textualis in dark brown ink, regulations were made in red. The text field measures 180 x 90 mm and there are 15 lines of text per page. The volume is of extraordinary size as the height of most books of hours varies between 12 and 14 cm (ca. 4.8 to 5.6 inches). Apart from the prayers this book of hours includes the complete calendar written in brown and red ink and decorated with beautiful borders in the upper left coner. The calender emphasizes for example St. Amandus (bishop of Maastricht, day of remembrance 6th January) and St. Eligius (bishop of Noyon, days of remembrance 25th June and 1st December). As these are Saints who were mainly worshipped in the North of France and the surrounding areas these dates show hat the book most likely originated from that region. Overall, the volume contains 11 fullpage miniatures !!! The text starts with a large initial (spreading over six lines) in blue and mauve on burnished gold ground. The initial is framed in gold and decorated with leafy design in blue, red and green inside. Moreover, fine white lines have been applied to the interior of the initial forming elegant floral patterns. The text on the ornament pages is framed in gold and blue. Around the frame, there is an oppulent leafy border including leaves, fruits and flowers. A peacock is shown in the border of the first ornament page. Furthermore, the manuscript includes 116 brandished gold initials, each spreading over two lines of text, on a two-colored ground (blue and mauve) and fine floral patterns in white ink. Apart from these, 684 lombard initials are included, half of them in gold with black floral ornaments the other half in blue with red ornaments. On 191 pages, that is more than half of the 364 pages, there are leafy designs arranged right, left and/or above the text. As to their desing they are very similar to the borders on the ornament pages including colored flowers and fruits, using burnished gold, blue, red, mauve and green. Two inscriptions on the last leaf verso show that the book was in the possession of the Counts of Blois in the middle of the 16th century. The entries inform of the birth of the children of Loys de Blois and his wife Helène Tatin, Laurens (born in July 1549) and Marguerette (March 23, 1550, deceased the following day). Also mentioned are the godparents, among them a Laurens Allou whose ownership entry is also to be found on the lower endpaper, as well as an ownership entry of L. de Blois. It is possible that the book was a present by Allou on the occasion of the birth of his godchild. ______________________________ Please pay attention to our other auctions!!!
