DESCRIPCION En los comienzos de la Edad Media la producción de copias de la Biblia en su totalidad era rara y se copiaban algunos libros individuales o colecciones de libros de la Biblia para usos concretos. En este sentido, los Evangeliarios fueron creados como libros de estudio y también como libros para ser expuestos en ceremonias y usos hornamentales. Los Evangeliarios llegaron a convertirse en el modo de expresión más idoneo para desarrollar toda la profusión de miniaturas e iluminaciones hasta aproximadamente finales del S XI. A lo largo de la historia, los evangeliarios han sido valiosos objetos artísticos. En concreto, en ellos ha tenido especial manifestación el arte de la miniatura desarrollada principalemente en el periodo carolingio y románico. Carlomagno creó cuatro grandes escuelas en las que se crearon verdaderas obras de arte en miniaturas sobre los libros litÚrgicos : * Escuela palatina, Último cuarto del siglo VIII. Creada en la corte, originada en el Evangeliario de la Coronación (Viena), que segÚn la tradición fue hallado por Otón III a los pies del cadáver de Carlomagno, cuando se abrió su sepulcro * Escuela de Ada. Relacionada con la anterior, emplea abundantemente el oro y la plata. * Escuela de Tours, segundo tercio del siglo IX. Gira en torno a la figura de Alcuino, pariente de Carlomagno. Se siente influencia irlandesa. Una derivación de esta escuela es la escuela de corte de Carlos I el Calvo, del Último tercio del s. IX. * Escuela de Reims, primer cuarto del siglo IX. Marca la evolución hacia el románico. * Otras escuelas. Relacionadas con la escuela de Reims están las de Saint Denis, Metz y Fulda, que se relacionan con las obras otonianas del siglo X. Individual books or collections of books were produced for specific purposes. Gospel Books were produced for both private study and as "display books" for ceremonial and ornamental purposes. Many of these volumes were elaborate; the Gospel Book was the most common form of heavily illuminated manuscript until about the 11th century, when the Romanesque Bible and Psalter largely superseded it in the West. In the East they remained a significant subject for illumination until the arrival of printing. The Evangelist portrait was a particular feature of their decoration. Most of the masterpieces of Insular illumination are Gospel Books, and very many Byzantine and Carolingian examples. But most Gospel Books were never illuminated at all, or only with decorated initials and other touches. They often contained, in addition to the text of the Gospels themselves, supporting texts including Canon Tables, summaries, glossaries, and other explanatory material. Carlomagno created four big schools in which true works of art in miniatures on service books were created: * Escuela of the palate, last quarter the century VIII.
