LONDON: Printed by T. Hodgkin. 1685. (Published date 1713). RARE FOURTH EDITION. (The 1st & 2nd editions are of extraordinary rarity). Small 4to. 8.0" x 6.25" inches (LxB). Pp. [xviii], 616, [8] pages + Portrait frontispiece + 10 (of 12) fine copper engraved anatomical illustrations, most folding. Last page of ads dated 1685. A rare book bound in a fine modern full mottled calf leather binding with blind tooling in antique style, spine with 5 raised bands & a black gilt lettered morocco label. Fourth edition of this surgical manual, the second to include the Anatomy and the illustrations. A Civil War surgical manual, first published in 1648. The second and larger part contains The Art of Chirurgery, and the first part the Institutions and Aphorisms (the part with the Institutions and the Aphorisms of Hippocrates did not appear in the first edition). The first two editions are rarely found; later editions were enlarged in format and provided with illustrations, although most copies are in poor condition. See Parker, The early history of surgery in Great Britain, pp. 111113: "this became a favourite text-book for surgery, midwifery, and therapeutics." [Wing C6015]. Russell only mentions ten plates, the Wellcome copy lacks five, and the two copies that have appeared at auction between 1975 and 2003 have had only eight and six plates respectively. A classic work.
