The Most Famous Puritan Devotional Manual in a VERY RARE pre 1650 edition PRINTED BY ROBERT ALLOT CONNECTED TO SHAKESPEARE AND BEN JOHNSON Bayly, Lewis, d. 1631. The practice of piety: directing a christian how to walke that he may please God : Amplified by the author. [London] : Printed for Robert Allot, and are to be sold at the signe of the Beare in Pauls Church yard., 1634. COMPLETE, Signatures: A 2G.; [18], 701, [1] p. ; 12mo., 14 x 8.5 cm., half loss to 439/440, some marginal shortening to 315 322 with minor text loss; 17th century calf boards, spine loss, boards broken, some occasional worming, pages loose, still a very charming copy of a book that is invariably found in poor condition due to its heavy devotional use. It is for that reason that a surprisingly few number of pre 1650 copies survive despite repeated printings in numerous editions. 17th century contemporary Puritan prayer for the Fruits of Righteousness penned on the first blank flyleaf.

Contemporary ownership signature and $200 pencil price notation (c. 1960s) The Practice of Piety by Lewis Bayly was one of the most famous and important treatises ever penned by a Puritan. This devotional manual went through numerous editions and was translated into six languages (including the language of the Massachusetts Indians.)
