Ptolemy (Greek: Kladios Ptolemaos, Latin: Claudius Ptolomaeus; * about 100 AD; about 180 AD) was a mathematician, geographer, astronomer and astrologer. He probably lived and worked in Alexandria (Egypt).

This is an extremely rare, coloured original copper engraving map after Ptolemy. It is among the earliest copper engravings and among the earliest maps ever printed.

The map shows India between the Indus in the west and the Ganges in the east. At the lower margin, a part of the island Taprobana is displayed, which is mostly considered to be Ceylon (Sri Lanka).The Rome edition of 1478 is the 3rd edition of Ptolemys geographic work, the 2nd including maps.

The map offered here comes from the 1478 or 1490 Rome editions which have been printed by the same plates. As far as we know it is not possible to distinguish both edition from each other.

Conrad Sweynheym who introduced the first printing press to Italy in the 1460ies prepared the edition for several years. However, he died in 1477 before the publication. The project was taken up by Arnold Buckinck, originally from Cologne, who led the edition to completion on 10th October 1478.

An outstanding feature of the maps of the Rome editions is the fine Roman letters used for the place names on the plates. In an apparently unique experiment, these letters were not engraved with a burin but punched into the printing plate using metal stamps or dies.

A further unusual aspect is that the maps were printed on 2 sheets which later became joined in the middle.

It is proved that Columbus owned an exemplar of the 1478 Rome edition which served as one of his sources for preparing his upcoming expeditions. The maps of Ptolemy solidified the navigator's belief that the fastest route from Europe to the Indies was to sail directly west across the Atlantic, which as is known led to the discovery of America.

The engraved maps of the Rome editions are widely considered the most virtuosic and beautiful Ptolemaic plates before the publication of Mercators maps.

The map offered here is doubtlessly among the most impressive and historically most valuable cartographic images of the region shown.

Ptolemus (griech. Kladios Ptolemaos, lat. Claudius Ptolomaeus; * um 100; um 180), war ein Mathematiker, Geograph, Astronom, Astrologe, Musiktheoretiker und Philosoph. Er lebte und wirkte wahrscheinlich in Alexandria (gypten).

Dies ist eine extrem seltene, kolorierte originale Kupferstichkarte nach Ptolemus. Sie gehrt zu den frhesten Kupferstichen und zu den frhesten Landkarten die je gedruckt wurden.

Die Karte zeigt Indien zwischen dem Indus im Westen und dem Ganges im Osten. Am unteren Rand ist ein Teil der Insel Taprobana zu sehen, die meist als Ceylon (Sri Lanka) angesehen wird.

Die hier angebotene Karte stammt aus der 1478er oder 1490er Rom Ausgabe, beide Ausgaben wurden mit den selben Platten gedruckt und sind nach unserem Wissen nicht voneinander zu unterscheiden.

Conrad Sweynheym, der in den 1460er Jahren den Buchdruck in Italien eingefhrt hatte, arbeitete mehrere Jahre an der Ausgabe, starb jedoch 1477 noch vor der Verffentlichung. Das Projekt wurde vom aus Kln stammenden Drucker Arnold Buckinck bernommen, der das Werk schlielich am 10. Oktober 1478 verffentlichte.

Ein besonderes Merkmal der Karten der Rom Ausgaben sind die feinen lateinischen Buchstaben, die fr die geographischen Bezeichnungen verwendet wurden. In einem vermutlich einzigartigen Experiment wurden diese Buchstaben nicht mit einem Stichel in die Druckplatte geschnitten sondern mit einer Art Metallstempel gestanzt.

Bemerkenswert ist auerdem, da die Karten jeweils auf 2 Bltter gedruckt und spter in der Mitte zusammengefgt wurden.

Es ist nachgewiesen, da Columbus ein Exemplar der 1478er Ausgabe besa, an dem er sich unter anderem fr seine bevorstehenden Fahrten orientierte. Die Karten von Ptolemus festigten Columbus Glauben, da die schnellste Route von Europa nach Indien westwrts durch den Atlantik gehe, was bekanntermaen zur Entdeckung von Amerika fhrte.

Die Kupferstichkarten der rmischen Ausgaben gelten als die virtuosesten und schnsten ptolemischen Abbildungen vor Mercators Weltatlas von 1578.

Die hier angebotene Karte gehrt zu den wohl beeindruckendsten und historisch wertvollsten kartographischen Abbildungen des dargestellten Gebiets, die je gedruckt wurden.
