Title: Rare and Early Legal Document from Spanish Colonial Perú 1562 Summary: This legal document dates from the 9th of November of 1562. It regards Juana Muñoz, widow of Alonso Mendez. This document concerns the distribution of the possesions of Miguel de Cornejo among his great-grandchildren. Juana Muñoz, as the administrator of the estate gives legal authority to Diego de Gutierrez and Antón de Castro, residentes of Arequipa to represent at all tribunals. It would appear that Juana Muñoz had remarried at some point with Miguel de Cornejo and when he passed away, she was left as the sole administrator of the estate. The early spelling of Perú (spelled Pirú) is found in this text. Several people are mentioned in this document and there are also many signatures. Diego Gutierrez – signature is readable Juana Muñoz Antón de Castro Miguel de Cornejo This is one of the earliest documents available from Spanish Colonial Perú. It was written only a few years after the conquest. CONDITION: This historic 8 page document is folio size. The handwritten information is on the front and back of the page and measures 12" X 8". The paper is handmade and has the watermark of a large circle and inside the circle is a man walking carrying a stick. The paper has a heavy parchment feel to it. It is not vellum but it is old quality handmade paper. The writing is clear and the signatures are bold. No rips, tears or staining. This leaf is a true piece of Spanish Colonial history. PROVENANCE: We have acquired a collection of these rare Spanish Colonial documents ranging from the 1500’s to the 1800’s originating from Peru. There are only 6 of these types of documents available.
