RARE FIRST PRINTING OF THE BATTLE OF LEXINGTON, 1775 Picture(s) and Description:

Normal 0 false false false MicrosoftInternetExplorer4 MAJABALI CELEBRATING 13 YEARS OF SELLING INTERNATIONALLY ON EBAY OFFERED WITH NO MINIMUM BID OR RESERVE! In this lot we are very pleased to offer a very rare piece of American Revolutionary War historical memorabilia. As one cataloguer has described this rare almanac: “This rare and historic almanac, containing first hand accounts of the Battles of Lexington and Concord, collected on that day and perhaps the following day, is an important record of the American Revolution.” Offered here with no minimum bid or reserve is a very rare copy of the 1776 ALMANAC OF THE BATTLE OF LEXINGTON: Eye Witness Account of the Battle of Lexington: THE NORTH-AMERICAN'S ALMANACK, AND GENTLEMAN'S AND LADY'S DIARY, FOR THE YEAR OF OUR LORD CHRIST 1776, by Samuel Stearns. Massachusetts Bay: Printed for I. Thomas, in Worcester; B. Edes, in Watertown; and S. & E. Hall, in Cambridge, [1775]. Duodecimo, (6 ¾ inches by 4 ¼ inches), printed wrappers, 18 (of 24) pp. Also sewn-in is a 42-page handwritten record of accounts for the years 1779-1782, by an unknown recorder. Although the Almanac is lacking a few pages, it does contain a complete and very legible text: "An Account of the Commencement of Hostilities between Great-Britain and America, in the province of Massachusetts Bay, by the Rev. Mr. William Gordon, of Roxbury," pp. [5-16]. It also contains “A Short History which sheweth how the Charters of the city of London, with other parts of old England, and the British Colonies in New-England were taken away in the Reign of King Charles the IId.,;" “Sir Richard Rum's Advice to the soldiers and others;" and the first two pages of “Directions for preserving the Health of the Soldiers in the camps.” In 2008, the firm Early American auctioned off a partial copy of this almanac (16 pages only, trimmed and each page separately broken out of the almanac and remounted on new paper) for $3,250.00. That example can be viewed at the following link: http://www.liveauctioneers.com/item/4891135 The full text of “An Account of the Commencement of Hostilities between Great-Britain and America, in the province of Massachusetts-Bay, by the Rev. Mr. William Gordon, of Roxbury," as presented in this Almanac can be viewed and easily read by using the following two links, (six pages each per link). In this text, Gordon recounts the secret British march by night toward Lexington, which he himself witnessed. He followed the British army, but arrived too late in Lexington to observe the battle. He then interviewed various people who were present, and assembled this account of what took place that day. This is the first printed account of the “shot heard around the world.” http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2006-6/1189611/M-1147a.jpg http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2006-6/1189611/M-1147b.jpg Additional pages from this rare and historic Almanac as well as some of the accounts pages tipped in can be viewed by using this link: http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2006-6/1189611/M-1147c.jpg The condition of this rare artifact of American Revolutionary War history is generally good. Some pages are dog eared, and there is some chipping as well as wear and some yellowing. There are also areas of slight staining. There are no torn or incomplete pages. As previously mentioned, there are 42 pages of hand written accounts by an unknown person covering the Revolutionary War years 1779 to 1782. A number of persons are mentioned within these accounts and this warrants further research as it appears that the account maker was supplying provisions and oxen for the Continental Army or Massachusetts Militia.
