Ri Broadside – Wilkins Updike – Whig Party – 1847 Picture(s) and Description:
ELECTORS OF THE WESTERN DISTRICT! READ AND CONSIDER! At a meeting of gentlemen of the Whig Party, and of citizens generally, favorable to the election of Hon. WILKINS UPDIKE, to Congress, held at Kingston Court House, Aug.11, 1847. 12 1/2" x 19" Rhode Island Broadside 1847. Printed in three columns. First line: "The meeting was called to order by Elisha R. Potter, Esq. the Hon. George D. Cross, of Westerly, was chosen chairman." In this broadside the Whig party in Rhode Island is promoting the election of Wilkins Updike to the US Congress. The Whigs express their displeasure with President Polk and his administration and all the money the War with Mexico is costing. They fear that slavery will be extended in the territories the US takes from mexico. They are also worried about the country going into debt to pay for the war. At the end of the third column is a list of appropriations since the beginning of the War. This rare RI broadside has some creases and folds and some extremely minor foxing but overall very good condition! Buyer pays shipping & insurance. NO RESERVE!
