THIS IS A VERY RARE OPPORTUNITY TO ACQUIRE THE FIRST EDITION OF GULLIVERS TRAVELS, ONE OF THE GREATEST OF ALL WORKS OF FICTION IN ENGLISH, WITHOUT HAVING TO SPEND THE FOUR OR FIVE THOUSAND DOLLARS THAT A TYPICAL TEERINCK B WILL COST, MUCH LESS FIFTY OR SIXTY THOUSAND FOR A TEERINCK A.

The full title of the first volume reads as follows: Travels Into Several Remote Nations of the World. In Four Parts. By Lemuel Gulliver, first a Surgeon, and then a Captain of several Ships. / London: / Printed for Benj. Motte, M, DCC, XXVI [1726].

The full title of the second volume reads as follows: Travels Into Several Remote Nations of the World. / In Four Parts. / By Captain Lemuel Gulliver. / Volume Second. / London, / Printed for P. Turnbull in St. Pauls Church Yard. / MDCCLXVI [1766],

Jonathan Swift has, of course, long been acknowledged as a master of satirical prose unsurpassed in the English language. Gullivers Travels has entered the consciousness of the Western World to an extent that few works can match. Gullivers voyages to Lilliput, Brobdingnag, Laputa, and the Country of the Houyhnhnms (and the Yahoos) have become proverbial. Broadly, Gullivers Travels is a satire of European government, an enquiry concerning whether human corruption is inherent or acquired, and a reengagement in the battle between adherents of ancient and modern authors. The work must also be given some credit for forging ahead on the path of the ironic author and the unreliable narrator.

Internally, the two volumes are in excellent condition. Volume 1 is a fine copy, with wide margins, clean, white pages and dark, crisp print. The title shows a small amount of wear to the outer edge, and the first few leaves show light toning in the margins. The two maps are excellent impressions. The second volume shows light wear upon the title page, but is otherwise in excellent condition internally, with ample margins, clear print and slight toning at the margins.

The two volumes are complete in all respects, save that the first volume lacks the frontispiece portrait. The first volume comprises 310 numbered pages, plus the titles, preliminaries and maps. The second volume comprises 87 numbered pages in the third part, and 109 in the fourth, plus the titles and preliminaries.

The first volume collates A X8, Y1. The second volume collates [1], O Z8, Aa Bb8, Cc4, Dd2. The first volume measures about 19.7 cm by 12.8 cm by 2.9 cm; each page measures about 189 mm by 119 mm. The second volume measures about 19.6 cm by 12.7 cm by 2.7 cm; each page measures 193 mm by 123 mm.

The first volume is bound in full early 18th century polished calf. The binding is somewhat worn, with both boads detached. The book block is strong and in very good condition. The second volume is bound in full mid 18th century sheep. The binding is solid and in very good condition, with minor wear at the corners and edges.

In all, this is an excellent opportunity to acquire a genuine 1726 first edition of the first volume (parts 1 and 2) of Gullivers Travels, one of the great masterworks of English literature, together with a 1766 edition of the second volume (parts 3 and 4), both printed at London, in early and mid 18th century bindings respectively, and offered with no reserve.

Please take the time necessary to review the photos below in order to gain a better understanding of the content and condition of the volumes. Please also take a moment to view my other listings of fine and rare English and Continental printed books dating from the 15th through the 19th centuries.
