The full title reads as follows: Travels Into Several Remote Nations of the World. In Four Parts. By Lemuel Gulliver, First a Surgeon, and then a Captain of several Ships.

Jonathan Swift has, of course, long been acknowledged as a master of satirical prose unsurpassed in the English language. Gullivers Travels has entered the consciousness of the Western World to an extent that few works can match. Gullivers voyages to Lilliput, Brobdingnag, Laputa, and the Country of the Houyhnhnms (and the Yahoos) have become proverbial. Broadly, Gullivers Travels is a satire of European government, an enquiry concerning whether human corruption is inherent or acquired, and a reengagement in the battle between adherents of ancient and modern authors. The work must also be given some credit for forging ahead on the path of the ironic author and the unreliable narrator.

This is an excellent copy of one of the most desirable first editions in collectable English literature. To read Gullivers Travels in the first edition, in a strictly contemporary and unrestored 18th century binding, is a pleasure many desire and few are privileged to enjoy.

The binding of the present copy shows only light wear at the corners and the heads of the spines. The front hinges are very lightly cracked, but holding firmly by the cords. The rear hinges are intact and show only slight wear (i.e. they are not cracked).

Internally, the two volumes are in excellent condition. Volume 1 is a fine copy, with clean, white pages and dark, crisp print. The first couple of gatherings of Volume 2 are lightly dampstained, but the volume is otherwise fine. The margins are wide throughout.

The two volumes are complete in all respects, save that the first volume lacks a single leaf from the table of contents to the first part (the leaf never was present, which conclusion follows from the binding being contemporary and unrestored). The first volume comprises 148 numbered pages in the first part, and 164 in the second, plus the titles, preliminaries and plates. The second volume comprises 154 numbered pages in the third part, and 199 in the fourth, again plus the titles, preliminaries and plates.

The first volume collates A-K8, A3, B-K8, L8, M2. The second volume collates A4, B-K8, L4, A5, B-N8, O4. All plates are present; the frontispiece is in the second state, with horizontal chain lines. Each volume measures about 21.1 cm by 13.0 cm by 3.3 cm; each page measures about 194 mm by 122 mm.

In all, this is a very attractive, very rare and very desirable set of the first edition of Gullivers Travels, Teerincks AA, one of the greatest of all works of English literature, printed in two volumes at London in octavo in 1726, finely bound in the original and unrestored early 18th century paneled calf, with the frontispiece portrait of Gulliver and six maps, offered at a reasonable reserve.

Please take the time necessary to review the photos below in order to gain a better understanding of the content and condition of the volumes. Please also take a moment to view my other listings of fine and rare English and Continental printed books dating from the 15th through the 19th centuries.
