Description, contents and further information: The first volume includes a beautiful engraved frontispiece by Antonio Luciani who worked in Venice around 1700. The picture shows Thomas Aquinas writing, surrounded by a band of angels. All volumes feature a woodcut printer's mark on the title. The title page of the first volume is printed in red and black. The Summa Theologica is Thomas Aquinas' (1225 1274) main work. The writing which he started in 1265 offers an extensive faith system which is mainly addressed to novices. Today, the Summa is considered one of the most important philosophical theological works. It largely deals with the Christian faith, moral teachings, sacraments and theology. Apart from the Bible, Thomas used liturgical and theological texts as sources, among them Aristotle whose ontology he enhanced. The Summa Theologica is without doubt one of the most important theological works ever written. The copy at hand contains all three parts of the Summa as well as the supplements and the index volume in a wonderful 1736 edition.
