By Captaine John Smith, Sometymes Governour Of Those Countryes And Admirall Of New England. From The London Edition Of 1629.

Captain John Smith (1580 1631), Admiral of New England was an English soldier, an avid explorer and the author of several publications. He is remembered for his role in establishing the first permanent English settlement in North America at Jamestown, Virginia, and his brief association with thE Native American Indian girl living in Virginia; Pocahontas, during an altercation with the Powhatan Confederacy and her father, Chief Powhatan. Smith was a leader of the Virginia Colony based at Jamestown and continued to lead expeditions and explorations along the rivers of Virginia and Chesapeake Bay. He also was responsible for naming New England, and his writings and observations provide a great deal of important and valuable information and history.

His books and maps may have been as important as his deeds, as they encouraged more Englishmen and women to follow the trail he had blazed and to colonize the New World. He encouraged everyone with this famous comment; Here every man may be master and owner of his owne labour and land.If he have nothing but his hands, he may, by industrie quickly grow rich. Smith emphasized the harsh realities of this new land, the need of a strong work ethic, and the ability to bear the hardship this new country would offer. He was truly an American hero and his ability to work with, and compromise with the Native American Indians gained the respect of all. Smith focused heavily on American Indians in all of his works concerning the New World. Smith's relationship with the Powhatan Indians is the sole factor that saved the Jamestown colony from sharing the fate of the Roanoke colony. His relations with the Indians were very wise in that: He was friendly toward them, but never let them forget the might of English weapons. Realizing that the very existence of the colony depended on peace, he never thought of trying to exterminate the natives. Only after his departure were there bitter wars and massacres, the natural results of a more hostile policy.

Among contents addressed; His Beginnings, His Service in Netherlands, Scotland, The Noble Villany of Four French Gallants and Smith Thrown Overboard, A Desperate Sea fight in the Straits, Passage to Rome, Naples and View of Italy, A Brave Encounter of the Turks Army with the Christians, Assan Bashaw, etc. Also The Savages Revolt, The Arrival of Sir Thomas Gates, James Towne Abandoned, Lord La Warre, Captain Percie, Sir Thomas Dale, The Marriage of Pochantas to Master Rolfe, Articles of Peace with the Savages, A Spanish ship to Virginia, The Death of Powhatan, Ten English Slain, The Arrival of Sir Francis Wyat with Nine Ships, The Cause and Manner of the Massacre, The Loss of Captain Spilman and 26 Men, A Brief Relation by Capt. John Smith to his Majesties Commissioners for the Reformation of Virginia, A Proclamation; No Tobacco be used in England but that which comes from Virginia or the Somer Isles, The relation of the Shipwreck of Henry May, More Shipwrecks, Master More sent to Make a Plantation, How New England has been Accounted but a Miserable Desert, A Description of the Country, The Yearly Trials of New England, New Plymouth, (Plimouth), Death of Tusquantum, They Continue to Murder the English, etc., etc. Some of the earliest history ever recorded on the original settlements in America.
